Ryan Elementary STEAM School has shifted from traditional nightly homework to STEAM homework in order to embrace student choice, encourage creativity, and cultivate curiosity. This shift away from traditional homework allows students to explore problem solving and work on high order thinking skills important to their success as a 21st century learner.
Another goal in shifting to the STEAM homework policy is to reduce stress on busy families and eliminate the homework battle. Many of our students are already involved in a multitude of activities outside of school, and we want to honor, value, and encourage that. Students need to spend time with their families, relax, and play after a long day at school. We believe students will be more inspired to learn at home when homework is flexible and they have both choice and ownership over their work.
Education is constantly evolving, and we are evolving with it. We understand this shift in homework looks very different than when you were in school, as well as within the last 5 years. We have a very diverse population at our incredible school, and we feel there is no "one-sized-fits-all" solution to elementary homework. We hope to partner with families as they discover the best ways to support their unique student's at home learning needs.
