The 5th Grade Musical:
Every year the all the 5th graders put on a musical. Everyone is in the show, but we have auditions for solo singing and speaking parts.

How do you choose the musical? My first criteria is that I have to like the music. We will be spending several months working on the show and it is impossible to be inspired if I am not enjoying myself. Secondly, I look for a musical where the smaller (not solo parts) are FUN! It's easy to have a good musical if the children are having fun--running around as a jungle animal or dalmatian puppy, dancing and working as an Oompa Loompa, or swabbing the deck as a pirate. Lastly, there are a lot of great shows out there, but the shows we do have to be published for 5th graders and have to have an appropriate message.
What is the timeline for the musical? The 5th Grade Musical will be in March this year. I will announce the musical to the 5th Grade students in October. Auditions are in early November, and the cast list will go out before Veteran's Day. We will start working on large group music between Thanksgiving and Winter Break, and after-school rehearsal for select characters will begin on January 9 (when we get back from break.)
