Book Report
PART 1: THE SUMMARY
The first part of your book report should be a summary of the book. It should explain what happens throughout the book, highlighting the key events. Begin with sharing the title, author and the year the book was written.
Suggestion: If the Fever Model feels a lot like plot diagramming to you - well it is! So you can use this model for this section as well.
Don't worry about spoilers. I have read all the books, I know what happens and I know how they are different from the movie.
This section should be about 2-3 paragraphs.
PART 2: PERSONAL REVIEW
This is the area where you get to share your thoughts and reflections on the book. Here are some questions to consider when writing this section:
What was effective about the book?
What was the intention of the author? Did they achieve it?
Would you recommend this book? If so, to who and why? If not, why not?
If you met the author, what is something that you would share with them about the book?
This section should be about 1 - 2 paragraphs.
PART 3: HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This area is where you explain the historical context behind your book. Explain what time period and event(s) this book is set in, and provide additional information that helps to understand the history behind the book. This is also the area where you talk about how accurate the book is, and whether it is meant to be non-fiction or fiction.
What are the key events, people, places, time periods, etc. that your book addresses?
Is this book nonfiction or fiction?
What aspects of the book seem to accurate?
What is the rest of the history?
This section should be about 2 - 3 paragraphs.
PART 4: HISTORICAL ANALYSIS
This last section is where you use the book to demonstrate some sort of historical skill. Choose one of the concepts below to complete for this section.
COMPARISON: Choose another book that you have read that addresses a similar issue and compare the ways the authors try to address the topic.
CAUSE AND EFFECT: Consider the reasons as to why the author would choose this book and what impact the writing of the book may have. Try to make a specific connection to the content in the book.
ANALYZING SOURCES: Find additional primary or secondary sources that support or contradict the main idea of this book and explain.
INTERPRETATION: Identify another historian or other expert's review of the book and evaluate their interpretation. Consider their expertise and credibility when looking at their interpreation.
This section should be about 3-4 paragraphs and is the most important part of the paper.
Between the four sections, your final product will be anywhere between 8 - 12 paragraphs. When turning in your final product, please make sure that all of your sections are clearly delineated, and that you have edited your paper so it is clear of spelling and grammatical errors.
