About the program

The Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. Team Managers guide students in grades 3-­12 to form teams and read the same set of books. Ryan Elementary has a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade team. 

The goal of the program is to increase our students' love and level of reading. Beginning in January, teams will meet weekly during school hours for practice sessions. In late February, there will be a quiz to determine who is on the Battle Team. The top six scores from the quiz will form our Battle Team (5 team members + 1 alternate). Battle Team members from each grade will compete against other BVSD schools, and show their knowledge of the books by answering questions about those books during a competition on March 27, 2027 at Meadowlark School. All other team members will be on the Practice Team. They are still included in practices. There will be a celebration of reading with a lunch pizza party in May for team members who read all 10 books and attended all practices.
