The Chilly Chili Invitational is an annual Girls Golf Invitational tournament hosted by Broomfield High School usually played on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of March at Eagle Trace Golf Course. This is one of the very few high school golf tournaments of the year hosted on a Saturday. We have had some of the best high school girls golfers ever from Colorado play in this tournament, including the tournament co-record holder with a score of 69, Jennifer Kupcho, now a LPGA Major Champion!
Sometime in the mid 1980's John Ferraro was working for the Recreation Department with the City of Broomfield. He came up with the idea of holding an indoor golf tournament in the old (now torn down and rebuilt) Broomfield Community Center. John and his team built a full golf course inside the rec center. Golfers would play using whiffle balls, and their real golf clubs. They had holes that you had to hit the ball up a flight of stairs, several holes were built in the gym and they had a stream flowing through the gym. They even had an island green in the middle of the swimming pool. The purpose of this event was to raise money for the Broomfield High Golf Teams to afford practice times at local golf courses. This was an incredibly fun event that had people come from all over to play in. After the tournament, all the players would gather at a local restaurant and have chili for dinner as they handed out prizes.
Later, John Ferraro became the head golf coach for The Broomfield Eagles. While he was the head coach, he decided to bring back the Chilly Chili, but this time make it a real tournament, and have it as an Invitational tournament for girls high school golf teams. The tournament is no longer indoors, but we still serve chili after the tournament for all the girls.
The first Chilly Chili for the high school teams was in 2009. We are fortunate to have been able to continue to host this event each year on a Saturday so more parents, families, or friends are able to attend and watch the girls play.
Throughout the years, we have had some of the very best girls high school golfers play in the Chilly Chili, and we have posted all the best scores from individual players and team scores below.
