Building With Purpose: Perseverance
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
Last week, we talked about ownership. We talked about how every practice, every conversation, every sacrifice, and every act of encouragement is part of building something bigger than ourselves.
But building with purpose also requires something else: Perseverance.
Anyone can be excited when things are going well.
The real test comes when things get difficult. These moments matter.
· When practice is hard.
· When the game doesn't go our way.
· When we make a mistake.
· When we don't get the playing time we hoped for.
· When we are tired.
· When the results aren't what we expected.
In fact, those may be some of the most important moments of the season.
At BVCS, we don't want our student-athletes to believe that adversity means they are failing.
We want them to understand that adversity can be an opportunity to grow.
Every difficult moment can teach us something.
Failure can teach us humility.
Disappointment can teach us perseverance.
Correction can teach us wisdom.
Competition can teach us discipline.
Sacrifice can teach us service.
Adversity can strengthen our faith.
This is why athletics is such an important part of Christian education.
We aren't simply preparing students to win games.
We are preparing them for life.
And life will require perseverance.
Our students will face challenges long after they leave our classrooms and athletic fields. They will experience disappointment, failure, difficult decisions, broken relationships, and seasons when the path forward isn't easy.
Our hope is that through athletics, they learn how to respond.
Not perfectly. But faithfully.
· To work hard when nobody is watching.
· To encourage others when they are struggling.
· To accept correction.
· To take responsibility.
· To get back up.
· To trust God.
And to keep moving forward.
Character. Student. Athlete.
The order still matters.
Because the scoreboard will eventually be forgotten.
· The season will eventually end.
· The uniform will eventually be hung up.
· But the character being developed along the way can influence a lifetime.
So this week, let's not simply ask: “How are we doing?” Let's ask:
“Who are we becoming?”
Are we becoming more disciplined?
· More humble?
· More courageous?
· More servant-hearted?
· More faithful?
· More like Christ?
That's the kind of growth we want to celebrate at Big Valley Christian. Because we aren't just building athletes.
We are building people. And we aren't simply building for today.
We are building for a lifetime to pursue excellence, choose perseverance, and encourage one another.
Let's keep building a culture where Christ is honored, character is developed, and every opportunity becomes Worship in Action.
Overcome to Lead.
Overcome to Serve.
Overcome to be ready to go.
