All students in grades, K-12 must read TWO (2) books over the summer.
It is highly recommended to read a book from the lists provided (see individual school pages for more details).
There is NO assignment to turn in, BUT, teachers will plan fun activities to celebrate summer reading when school resumes in the fall
All book titles are widely available. Use the Butler Public Library to help you find them!
Many of the summer reading lists books are available at the Butler Public Library. If the Butler Public Library does not have a book on the list, you can have the book sent to the Library from another library which does own the book. Call the Library at (973) 838-3262 or come into the Library and Library staff will be more than willing to help you.
Need help choosing a book? Let other students help you. Be sure to check out the "Young Adult" tab on the library website to see book reviews written by Richard Butler Students!
Going somewhere? Select an audio book for the whole family to enjoy on the ride.
Choose a book as a family to read together, separately or out loud. Discuss each new chapter over the dinner table. When you’re done, choose another.
Talk to your friends and pick the same book. Engage in virtual book club meetings.
Look to your favorite film or streaming TV series for inspiration. Nine times out of ten, the book is better. Compare the two when you are done.
Choose a book you’ve read before and compare your experience reading it at this time in your life to that of the past. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is perfect for this. If you haven’t read it, do so now and plan on reading it again in a few years.
Feeling particularly stressed? Seek out books on mindfulness. Actively practice what you learn.
Use an app like GoodReads to browse lists and suggestions based on personal interests. Create an account, set goals, and log your reading. Or participate in one of the many summer reading contests available, including those that encourage reading articles
Read a book related to your future goals. Create a vision board with ideas to stay motivated and add to it throughout the year.
Complete a reading blog or journal. Spend time reflecting on how your book is affecting your life.
