Meet Gareth Mckenna

 The New COO of BUSC

I left University with a BA Honours in Sport from the University of Strathclyde/Jordanhill College.

I then worked for the National Governing Body of Scottish Curling (Royal Caledonian curling Club) in 1997 as Director of Development and Performance. I installed a new Development and Performance culture in the sport over 6 years. This included delivering the National Primary schools initiative "curlings cool" across Scotland in 30 local authorities and over 5000 school children participating in this curriculum project each year. This was generated through sponsorship/funding from Bank of Scotland and Sport Scotland. I introduced 7 Regional Curling Development Officers across the country that enabled pathways to be implemented into all 26 curling rinks, with funding from curling rinks, Bank of Scotland, Local Authorities, World Curling Federation and Sport Scotland. In addition I installed a new high performance culture into Scottish Curling ,which saw curling initiated as one of the first 6 sports supported by the Scottish Institute of Sport, access to a share of £20 million lottery funding and access to full time national coaches, sports science, conditioning and specialist support staff. In these 6 years Scottish Curlers won3 World Junior Championships, 4 European Championships, 2 World Championships and 1 Olympic Gold Medal at the 2002 Olympic Games.

In my next role I was appointed Manager of the West of Scotland Institute of Sport working with 7 sports in supporting their most talented athletes across 12 local authorities. The Head Office was based in Glasgow at the state of the art facility-Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park, however we developed a network of facilities, coaches and specialist staff that supported over 100 athletes across the West of Scotland. This was enabled through developing strategic partnerships and enhanced funding from Sport Scotland all 12 Local Authorities, Royal Bank of Scotland and a number of National Governing Bodies. This resulted in numerous athletes going on to represent Scotland and Great Britain in a number of Commonwealth Games, European, World and Olympic Games, winning a multitude of medals in all competitions.

My next role was in England at Northumbria University establishing them as one of the leading sporting Universities in the UK through their high performance and community development initiatives. We went on to win over 20 University Premier League titles in Golf, Rugby, Fencing, Netball, Basketball and Football. In doing so we also created a strong "Team Northumbria" franchise that competed in all National Leagues including The Sky Sports Netball Superleague.

We recruited performance athletes from all around the world to support our performance aspirations , with players from Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, USA, Samoa, Canada receiving scholarships.

After years of building success and the reputation of Northumbria University sport a £30 million sports facility was built as part of a £120 million campus development.

In 2010 I returned to Scotland as Director of Performance for Badminton Scotland with a focus on developing the performance pathway in Scotland and winning medals at major Championships in particular Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. This post culminated in over 30  European Tour Titles, 3 players ranked in top 15 of world rankings, Silver at European Championships, silver at World Championships and Silver and bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games

In 2016 I moved to Perth College as Head of Business Development, opening up and establishing the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing  as one of Scotland's leading sport centre businesses. In addition I oversaw many Government contracts and delivered training to over 50 regional businesses, oversaw the Modern Apprenticeship programme and generated over £1,5 million in revenue annually.

Over my career I have sat on numerous Boards of Management, including, Netball Scotland, Scottish Target Shooting, Scottish Council of Taekwondo, and I have just joined the Board of Live Active Leisure.

I am very much looking forward to working with all the staff, volunteers, clubs, customers and partners of BUSC to support the growth of BUSC and further support the community of Broxburn and West Lothian

COO Report

To all member clubs/facility users ansd partners of BUSC.

I have now been in post for 6 weeks and have taken time to try and meet as many people as possible within BUSC, if I have not met you yet I will do my utmost to do so in the very near future. I have also taken the time to meet with key community groups and partners over the last 6 weeks and I am still working my way around them.

My first impressions of BUSC are extremely positive. The work that is being carried out by our Board, staff, volunteers, member clubs, partners and wider stakeholders is very impressive. The facility is utilised by a multitude of users, across all age groups, genders and nationalities and the range of activities truly showcases the impact BUSC has on the community of Broxburn. It is a genuine and meaningful community asset.

We are delighted to be receiving support from the SFA and Scottish Government for a new initiative called "Extra Time" . We are now pulling together more activities (sport and non-sport)  aimed at people across various demographics that will support their development, assisting in some cases with greater access to programmes, support their physical and mental well being, enhance social inclusion and support respite for carers/teachers etc. These activities will be sporting and non sporting

I will update on this programme further in my next report.

The activities we have within BUSC are making a huge impact on the lives of many people and part of my role will be to enhance our reach and further the impact of BUSC on our community.

I have been fortunate to be working with a Board of Management and staffing cohort that are completely invested in supporting Broxburn and West Lothian and I would like to thank them for making me feel very welcome in my first 6 weeks.

Thanks also to our member clubs, customers, and community partners who have also reached out and made me feel very welcome.

The BUSC Board are finalising our strategy for the next 3 years and they have put in an impressive amount of work into this. We are completing the final stage of external consultation with the strategy to ensure it meets the needs of our community partners with a view to launch the strategy over the next 4-6 weeks.

We will be advertising our summer camps over the coming weeks so please stay posted to our Facebook page for details. The camps will start from the first Monday in July and will accommodate a camp for football and a camp for multi-sport/activity. Both camps this summer will allow drop off at 9am.

Please also note that we will be having a European Championship opening night on Friday 14th June, again please stay posted to our Facebook page for details.

Thank you again for my welcome to BUSC. It has been very much appreciated. I intend to do a report every quarter for the newsletter so will update again in July/ August.

Meet the New Sorts Development lead

Hi Everyone, it's great to be here at Broxburn United Sports Club as Sports Development Lead and I look forward to meeting many people from the community in my role at BUSC.

I am a retired professional footballer, playing the game professionally for 17 years. Some of my former clubs are Raith Rovers, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Partick Thistle and Wycombe Wanderers.

I was employed by Dundee United as a their U15 & 16’s phase coach for three years and worked within their Academy structure and School of Excellence programs. Since retiring from playing in 2017, I have steadily built my own coaching business Planet Soccer, and have worked with Broxburn Colts and other local clubs to support the development of players and coaches. Through my development as a coach and person, I currently hold a UEFA A license, I worked with some experienced people on this course and gathered valuable insights into player development which I can share in my role at BUSC. Professionally I am assistant manager at Gala Fairydean who currently play in the Scottish Lowland League, the fifth tier of Scottish Football.

I will reflect on my learning experiences and bring these to develop children, young people, and coaches at BUSC. It is a role that excites me greatly and I hope to contribute positively to everyone's learning journey. Young players excite me and watching them develop as a player and person gives me great satisfaction for the work we do in the community.

I understand people's abilities and I am here to support people of all abilities and aims at BUSC.
