If your student does not have time in their schedule to take a technical theater class they can participate in several after school activities.
Stage Management: Students will attend auditions, all rehearsals, tech and all shows. Student/s function is to keep the production organized. Create spreadsheets, contact lists, and sign in sheets.
Head stage manager: Will be selected to call the show. “Calling” means this student sits in the booth and calls all the lighting, sound, deck, fly, and video cues during tech and show.
Deck Stage Manager/s: The remainder of the stage managers will function as on deck supervisors during tech and show. Their responsibility is to be on headset communicating with the stage manager in the booth. They communicate with the deck crew. They also assist with direction backstage. (ie if an actor needs a prop set in a specific place, costume changes etc.)
Fly person: A fly person will attend all tech rehearsals and shows. They fly scenery in and out during tech and the shows. My preference is this person or people have taken my class and passed the rigging/fly unit of study with a 90 or better.
Deck Crew: Deck crew will attend all tech rehearsals and shows. They are assigned specific moves of scenery, props, or anything else that needs to be done during the course of the show. These positions may include deck carpenter, deck electrician, costume, props person.
Props Crew: Gathers, builds, or shops for props that are needed for the show. They will run props for tech and shows. They are responsible for setting up props tables, presetting props, and keeping everything organized for tech and shows.
Costume and Makeup Crew: Costume crew organizes costumes for tech and shows. They are responsible for maintaining costumes and performing quick changes. Makeup crew organizes makeup for the cast. They maintain make up kits and help cast put on makeup for tech and shows.
Lighting Crew: All lighting crew will attend all tech rehearsals and shows. They maintain the lighting rig for the run of the show. They run the lighting console or a follow spot or are a deck electrician. They may be asked to help out on the weekend or evenings before tech begins.
Follow spot operator: All spot ops will attend all tech rehearsals and shows. They operate a lighting instrument that highlights a person or object on stage.
Lighting console: Attends all tech rehearsals and shows. Programs and runs the lighting console.
Deck Electrician: Attends all tech rehearsals and shows. They move any lighting equipment on deck as needed and may move scenery or other duties as assigned by technical director or stage management.
Sound Crew: All sound crew will attend all tech rehearsals and shows. They maintain the wireless microphones and any other sound equipment for the show. They will be required to come early and stay later than most of the other crew. They prepare all the microphones prior to tech and shows by battering and cleaning if necessary. The positions are as follows. Sound board operator, assistant board op, deck sound crew, and backstage sound crew. They may be asked to help out on the weekend or evenings before tech begins.
Sound board operator: Controls all audio going to the auditorium and back stage during tech and shows. Creates and maintains the mic swap list.
Assistant sound board operator: Follows the script and helps the board op keep their place. May run sound effects.
Deck sound crew: Knows how to change batteries and address mic issues backstage during tech and shows and may move scenery or other duties as assigned by technical director or stage management.
Backstage sound crew: Knows how to fit mics to actors. Keeps mics organized before, during and after each show. Labels mic swap board. Keeps track of mic swaps during the show. May assign crew to perform mic swap.
Paint crew: Paint crew works after school and some weekends before technical rehearsals start. They work with Mrs. Eifert to paint the scenery for the show. Please email keifert@burltpwsch.org for more information.
Set construction crew: Set construction crew builds all the scenery for the shows. They work after school and on weekends before technical rehearsals start. They learn basic stage craft safety and hand tool use.
Dramaturg: This is a literary position. This person does not need to be present for tech or shows. They research the play and provide background information to the cast and director. They clarify content questions. They prepare a written piece for the program and sometimes a lobby display. They must attend several rehearsals. Contact serkert@burltwpsch.org for more information.
