Community service hours are hours spent during the year in work which directly benefits either (1) people experiencing poverty, discrimination, abuse, poor health, old age, and/or physical-mental limitations or (2) the protection of animals or the environment for which an individual does not receive financial compensation.
To be admitted to NHS as a junior you must have 20 confirmed service hours. To be admitted as a senior you must have 30 confirmed hours.
Inducted members must complete 15 hours the year they are inducted and 25 hours the following year.
Please see the What Counts page for information concerning what constitutes service hours.
SCHOOL SERVICE
All members of the NHS must participate in 3 varied school-sponsored activities each year.
Clubs that meet on a documented, regular basis and take attendance will count towards the NHS service to school requirement.
Music/Clubs/Sports that require participation in other activities would mean that the other required activity will not count. (One example of another activity that does NOT count would be weightlifting). Remember: in order to qualify for Burlington Township NHS the three minimum (per year) service to school requirements must be varied, i.e. service cannot be three sports or three clubs or all music, but for instance, a mix such as two sports/one club or a music/two clubs will count.
