BSD COVID-19 Staff Testing

Test Information

The Burlingame School District will be offering testing for COVID-19 for all staff, free of charge. We will be conducting weekly testing through Curative. If you have not opted-in for testing through BSD, please plan to get tested weekly through your own health care provider. If you have originally opted-out for testing through BSD and would like to opt in, please email our district nurse.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time as we are all chartering new territory and trying to make this process as easy and seamless as possible for you.

Questions on testing? Email Kirsten at kdiktakis@burlingameschools.org

Didn't submit an opt-in form, but you want to? Email Michelle at mbiteng@burlingameschools.org or show up on your testing day and we'll have hard copies for you to complete

Testing Update FAQs

Why did BSD switch to Curative Testing?

  • Samples will be collected through a cheek swab instead of a nasal swab. It is less invasive and uncomfortable to do the cheek swab compared to the nasal swab.

Why are we required to do weekly testing as opposed to monthly testing?

  • We decided to transition to weekly testing to help you and your colleagues feel safe. Frequent testing would allow us to learn about potential positive cases sooner and inform us about which employees need to be sent home. Learning about positives would also help the district nurse and admin with contact tracing , give us information about which close contacts to send home and which on-site rooms to "quarantine."

  • Although we are currently in distance learning, we would like everyone to get into the habit of weekly testing.

  • Most importantly, we care about the health and welfare of our staff and their families.

Will all BSD employees be tested at one testing location as what was previously done for our November 17th testing date?

  • No, absolutely not. We will be bringing the Curative COVID-19 testing to each site. Employees will no longer need to travel to another site to get tested. For the first testing dates, our district nurses and District Office staff will be coming to each campus to conduct testing. Please watch for your emails - details to follow!

What do I need to do before test day?

  • Click this link and register for Curative, takes 5 minutes. This link is for BIS staff ONLY. It is easiest to register from a smartphone as you are asked to take a picture of your insurance card--make sure you have it handy when you register and then show up on the dates/times listed above for your individual site. Schedules will be emailed to you!

How long will the test take?

  • Obtaining your oral sample should take no longer than 1 minute. You are required to cough 3-5 times prior to collecting your sample. After coughing, you are instructed to swab your mouth (cheeks, tongue, under your tongue, and around your gums) for about 20 seconds. Please see the video below for instructions.

Did you say I had to cough? How is that safe?

  • Yes, you do have to cough. We are ensuring the safety of others when collecting your sample. Testing will be located outside of your school site (on the playground area, outside of the MPR, you will receive an email with details). When you do cough, please remove your mask and cough into your elbow, making sure that you are at a safe distance from the district nurses (please stay at lest 6 feet away). Multiple testers may take the Curative test at once - this is what they do when they offer it within the community setting. If you are going to take the test at the same time as a colleague, please make sure you stay 6 feet apart (or more)! If possible, you can take the test kit to your classroom, complete your sample there, and drop it back off to the nurse when you are finished.

When will I receive my results?

  • Results will appear in 24-48 hours after the collection date.

How much will this cost me?

  • NO COST to you. Curative bills your insurance directly and there is no co-pay, no cost to the employee at all. Don't have insurance? No problem, they bill the Cares Act.

I am currently in quarantine or am a household contact of a positive case. Can I still come to take the test?

  • If you are in the middle of your quarantine, please do not come take the test. You are still required to complete your quarantine schedule. Please schedule a test with your health care provider.
