I would like to welcome all students and parents to my class. I am looking forward to a successful year. High School Math can be very challenging, but it is definitely fun. I hope our students will approach this subject with a good work ethic, positive attitude, and the optimistic attitude to learn.
By signing below, I acknowledge that I am entering into a learning contract for the Algebra: Concepts & Connections and IB Math courses at Burke County High School for the 2025-2026 academic year. This contract signifies my commitment to embody the principles of scholarship, mindfulness, and self-reflection throughout this learning journey.
I pledge to:
Embrace Scholarship: I will strive to be a dedicated scholar, engaging fully with the material and seeking to understand the deeper connections within algebra and geometry. I recognize that education is a lifelong journey, and I will approach each lesson with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Meditate and Maintain an Open Mind: I will cultivate a mindset that is open to new ideas and perspectives. I understand that learning often involves grappling with challenging concepts, and I will take time to reflect on my understanding and growth.
Follow Heggs’ 5 Rules: I commit to respecting my classmates in both words and actions, listening actively during discussions, focusing on class activities, coming prepared with all necessary materials, and following the teacher’s directions diligently.
Engage in Self-Assessment: I will regularly evaluate my work and progress, recognizing my strengths and areas for improvement. I understand that self-assessment is a vital part of my learning process, allowing me to take ownership of my education.
I understand that my success in this course is not only measured by grades but also by my growth as a learner. I will actively participate in class discussions, complete assignments on time, and seek help when needed. I recognize the importance of collaboration and communication in achieving my academic goals.
I will GROWL:
G - Goals - Set specific targets for what you want to achieve and create a plan to reach them.
R - Resourcefulness - Find creative solutions to problems using available tools and information.
O - Open-Mindedness - Be willing to consider new ideas and feedback from others.

Working (Really, Really) Hard: Put in the effort; success requires dedication.
Task Risks: Embrace challenges; remember that no risk means no reward.
It’s Okay to Be Wrong: Mistakes are part of learning; don’t be afraid to make them.

Academic Integrity: Students are expected to submit work for evaluation that has been completed solely by that student unless collaborative assignments have been designated. Academic integrity is always expected. If a student is found cheating on a graded assignment, the student will not receive credit for that assignment and will face possible disciplinary action.
