Curriculum & Instruction

Inspiring Learning for ALL in an ever changing world.

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction is responsible for assisting teachers and administrators with all aspects of teaching and learning for students and professional educators. Some of our areas of responsibility are listed below with links to additional information. If you need assistance, please call our office at 940-569-3326, Option 5 or Extension 2014.

Curriculum and Instruction Areas:

    • The GT program takes open referrals during the month of November.
    • Elementary students are served through a pull-out program and differentiation in the classroom when needed.
    • Secondary students are served through Pre-AP and AP classes with differentiation in the classroom when needed. They also have the option to take Gifted Interdisciplinary studies for project-based learning opportunities on topics of interest.
    • Due to The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, please let us know if you are enrolling a military-dependent child who has been identified as gifted in the student's previous school.

Advanced Placement (Pre-AP and AP)

Burkburnett ISD offers a wide number of Pre-AP and AP classes at the secondary level. Please talk with your student's campus counselor for additional information. BISD offers open enrollment for Pre-AP and AP classes.

Assessments

      • Local Assessments
          • CIRCLE Progress Monitoring (Pre-K). The CIRCLE (Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Reading and Education) is a Pre-K appropriate monitoring assessment used with our Pre-K4 students at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. The website, developed by the Children's Learning Institute at the UT Health Science Center, has resources for parents including activities to conduct with your child and parenting education information. https://cliengage.org/public/
          • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). This well-established universal test is designed to measure student growth over time and is given three times each year. https://www.nwea.org/map-growth/
          • Imagine Math is an online math diagnostic given at the beginning, middle and end of the year for K-5, based on campus discretion. Students also work on math skills through Imagine Math and can access the site from home to continue work at home with their family.
      • State Assessments

The Burkburnett ISD School Board adopts the official district calendar each spring for the following school year.

CTE courses are offered at Burkburnett High School to provide rigorous elective classes that are aligned to industry standards and may result in industry certifications. Credit by Exam

Credit by Exam is a method of accelerating through classes in which a student may already have a proficient level of mastery. CBE allows the student to demonstrate mastery on the class content before being enrolled in the class. For more information on Credit by Exam, please see Region 9 Education Service Center's CBE page.

      • Secondary CBE is offered for each required class by the semester. A deposit is required for Region 9 to order the test, but will be refunded on the date of testing.
      • Elementary CBE is offered for each grade level K-5, but a student must pass four core tests in order to accelerate a grade level: Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.
      • There are deadlines imposed for registration prior to testing dates. This information is published by Region 9 and only students who have had no prior instruction are eligible for CBE.

DMAC Data Management System is for use by school employees to run reports on state and local student achievement data. For more information, please contact Audrey Ash.

Dual-Enrollment Classes.

BISD offers a number of classes at the high school level in which the students can earn college credit and high school credit concurrently through Vernon College. This is a great way for self-directed and committed students to earn basic college credits at a fraction of the costs normally associated with higher education.

A second option is articulated dual-credit through Texas State Technical College. BHS offers several career and technical education dual-credit programs including Cybersecurity, Networking, and Medical Records. Students receive high school CTE credit and articulated credit for TSTC if they choose to attend after high school.

Please talk with the BHS Counseling Center for more information on either dual-credit program.

English Language Learners are identified in Burkburnett ISD upon enrollment. If a child's English Language Proficiency level is deemed appropriate for services, the school will partner with the family to offer intensive English instruction. With Sheppard Air Force Base nearby, the district often has a wide variety of primary languages due to the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program (ENJJPT). We welcome students from all nations and strive to make learning English as a Second Language an easy transition.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law in 2015 and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This federal education act for elementary and secondary schools guides much of the accountability for schools in the United States.

BISD's Gateway Education Program is a campus that can offer innovative learning options for our secondary students. Students who are At-Risk of dropping out of high school may find the individualized, self-paced method at Gateway more appropriate to finishing a high school degree. But other students may find Gateway offers a faster way through high school, enabling the student to pursue college or a career earlier in life. Other high school students may see Gateway as an option to get core classes out of the way in order to pursue CTE classes and electives. Whatever your high school student's needs and desires for finishing classwork, Gateway may be a viable alternative to the traditional brick and mortar high school. Please contact Gateway for more information.

Graduate Follow-Up Study.

Each year, BISD works with LifeTrack to survey our exiting Senior students about their plans for college, career, or military endeavors. We also conduct follow-up surveys at 2-years and 5-years post-graduation from high school. This helps BISD know how effective our schools are and how we might improve. You can read the Exit Survey for the Class of 2016 here.

New Staff Orientation.

Each year, BISD holds New Staff Orientation training for faculty new to BISD. Teachers who are brand new to the profession also become part of our Teacher Induction Program. BISD strives to provide support to all faculty members in order to retain qualify staff.

Professional Development.

Professional Development and Learning are a big part of working at Burkburnett ISD. We invest heavily in building the capacity of our staff in order to provide the best quality education to our students. Our professional development is systemic and intentional. For more information on current professional development for this school year, please contact Audrey Ash.

BISD received a Department of Defense Education Activity grant in the summer of 2016 to cover a STEM-related project involving Project Based Learning in the classroom. This grant spans the years of 2016-2020 and allows BISD to bring in The Buck Institute for Education to train all faculty on Project Based Learning as an instructional model. Project-based learning can be described as student-centered instruction that occurs over an extended time period, during which students select, plan, investigate and produce a product, presentation or performance that answers a real-world question or responds to an authentic challenge. For research on the benefits of PBL, please contact Ms. Hunter or Ms. Borchardt.

The Region 9 Education Service Center is a state-sponsored agency that assists schools in implementing state regulations and mandates, provides training in a variety of areas for BISD staff, and complements district services in several ways.

SafeSchools online training system provides the district-chosen method of delivering required federal and state training to faculty and staff. Assignments are deployed as needed to provide staff with a user-friendly system of completing these required trainings at their own pace.

At this link, the Texas Education Agency provides information on current state-adopted instructional materials and the cycle of renewing instructional materials.

Summer Academy

Each summer, BISD provides a Summer Academy to students who may need to retest on a state assessment, who need credit recovery, or who may have chronic absences from school. The program looks a little different each year depending on the needs of our participating students. Please contact Audrey Ash for additional information.

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills provides the state standards that must be taught in each grade and course.

The district currently used some materials from the TEKS Resource System, a curriculum management framework. If you are a parent or community member, look for the special login for Parents/Guests.
