TX-20008

2020-2021 BACK TO SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT

Incoming and returning TX-20008 AFJROTC cadets - UNIFORM ISSUE INFORMATION

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, we will not be hosting our normal Future Leader Orientation Week (FLOW) prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year. There will be a promotion opportunity within the first few weeks of school for cadets that complete a on-your own review.

UNIFORM ISSUE: For new or returning cadets, the tentative plan is to have designated times for cadets to sign up to get their AFJROTC uniform issued.

Tentative Uniform Issue Plan:

  • Cadets will sign up for a time (30 minute slot)

  • Burkburnett HS cadets will be Monday -Thursday after school

  • Iowa Park and City View cadets will be on a Saturday

  • Cadets will take home an information letter to parent(s) / guardian(s) the first week of school

    • Parent/guardian or cadet will annotate clothing sizes as listed on the letter (This will help the uniform issue process.)

  • Once a cadet signs up for a time they will be given an appointment slip for parent/guardian to sign and return to a JROTC instructor

  • *This plan is tentative and subject to change

  • Cadets will be required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing during the uniform issue process

Welcome to AFJROTC TX-20008

Burkburnett High School

The mission of Air Force JROTC is “To develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.”

Almost 900 high schools around the world host AFJROTC units. Each unit has at least two instructors: a retired Air Force officer and a retired Air Force NCO. The unit at Burkburnett High School is designated TX-20008 and was activated in August 2000.

Since August 2010, students from Iowa Park High School have also participated in the program. These cadets are transported by bus to/from Burkburnett High School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during 8th period. We are organized as a Cadet Group with a Cadet Group Commander, two Deputy Group Commanders, our Inspector General, and the Cadet Command Chief ensuring the proper functioning of the Corps. Activities include classroom academics (Aerospace Science & Leadership Education), physical fitness, community service, social events, drill teams, Saber team, color guard teams, field trips, base visits, the Veterans Day parade, an Annual Awards Banquet, and more.

Any student in 9th grade through 12th grade may enroll in the class. Uniforms are worn weekly by cadets and are provided at no cost to them. Cadets earn ribbons and promotions based on performance and can choose to attend optional Summer Leadership Camps at Howard Payne University. The cost for summer 2017 is $90 for the week. Cadets practice Air Force customs & courtesies as they advance from Cadet Airman to higher levels of responsibility. Air Force grooming standards (such as haircuts, facial hair, piercings, etc.) must also be maintained by all cadets.

Although many cadets enlist in the military or enroll in college ROTC programs after graduation, there is no military obligation. AFJROTC is not a recruiting program for the Armed Forces. Instructors do, however, guide and mentor cadets exploring enlistment options or applying for ROTC scholarships and Service Academies.

Cadet Christopher T. Nelson

2002 - 2019

"We are going to move forward and try to find a way."

Quote from Coach Mike Zimmer that depicts Cadet Chris Nelson's approach to life

Cadet Christopher Nelson, exemplified the mission of Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps...dedication to character and service. Chris was always present, whether it be performing on a color guard, participating in a community service event, or just helping another cadet. His positive can do attitude set the example for other cadets to follow. Although soft spoken and not one to seek the spotlight, Chris was always involved and a true asset to the TX-20008 program and cadet corps. Chris will always will be an important part of the TX-20008 Cadet Corps. You will be missed “Nelson 1”! - Major (Ret) Don Rousseaux SASI

Christopher Nelson was an amazing addition to the Burkburnett AFJROTC Cadet Corp. He loved the corp with a passion and he did everything he could to make it better. He participated in color guards, drill competitions, flag details, community service, and the Awareness Presentation Team. Chris performed in over 40 color guards; his favorite being 2018 homecoming. Chris’ dedication to the corp was outstanding and his presence made the corp substantially better. He lived by the Air Force core values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do. Fly High! - Connor Bailey (best friend and former TX-20008 Cadet)

10 December 2019

Today, we dedicated the TX-20008 Color Guard and Drill Team Equipment Room to Cadet Christopher T. Nelson, naming the room after him. Chris was and will always be a big part of TX-20008. He was always involved with color guards and drill. Knowing how much he loved being in JROTC, presenting the colors, and drill there was no question we had to memorialize Chris through naming our color guard and equipment room after him. In attendance for the unveiling ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, sister - Madison , and twin brother Cadet Shane Nelson.
