Students in the Burbank Unified School District who enter at the beginning (or novice) proficiency level
can expect to exit the program within 5 to 7 years, although many exit before that.
A student does not have to be in the program for a set number of years.
Reclassification is dependent on a child's ability to demonstrate complex language skills, particularly in writing at his or her grade level.
Examples:
A kindergarten student entering with Intermediate proficiency may reclassify by 2nd or 3rd grade.
A 2nd grade student may enter with Beginning proficiency but still reclassify by 4th or 5th grade.
High school transcripts do not indicate a language learner status, especially not an EL status from elementary.
Most elementary students are ready to be reclassified before entering middle school or even high school, particularly if they have received 5 to 7 years of instruction.
An example of an elementary student who is an EL in elementary continuing into high school would be:
Student enters 5th grade with Beginning fluency, continues through 6th, 7th, and 8th grade receiving ELD instruction. Student may or may not need an additional year in high school.
