About the Berhampur University, Bhanja Bihar
Berhampur University was established on 2nd January 1967 by the Odisha Act 21 of 1966 as an affiliating University. The seven districts originally under the territorial jurisdiction of the University are Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Koraput, Rayagada, Nowrangpur and Malkangiri with over 180 affiliated colleges. Lingaraj Law College, Berhampur is the only constituent college of the University. As per the recent decision of the Government, the territorial jurisdiction of Berhampur University has been redefined and the colleges located in the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Nowrangpur and Malkangiri have been transferred to Vikram Dev University, Jeypore (Koraput) w.e.f. the Academic Session 2023-24. After the amalgamation of Khallikote University, Berhampur University has experienced a great synergy and strengthened itself through creation of 04 (four) new Departments namely Environmental Studies, Library and Information Science, Biotechnology and Tourism & Travel Studies.
The University is currently functioning with 24 (Twenty four) regular PG Departments. These teaching Departments offer various courses in the streams of Science, Humanities and Business Studies at the Post-Graduate level and carry out Ph.D. & D.Litt. programmes. Besides, the University offers three Post-Graduate Courses on self-financing mode in subjects, such as, Pharmacy, Women’s Studies and Finance. The University also offers B.Ed. course on self-financing mode. Berhampur University is also having the distinction of running a DBT-sponsored stipend-based M.Sc. program in Biotechnology.
The University has fulfilled the aspirations of the largely agrarian, tribal and business oriented people around and beyond and catered to their higher education needs well for about six decades. The University has a plan to expand into new courses on climate change and food security, astronomy, public policy and governance, tribal studies, traditional arts and handicrafts etc. Our tuition fees are one of the lowest, and female students make up more than 50% of total students. We have most of the requisite infrastructure in place, and are progressing confidently with our vision and goals to be a university of eminence and substance.

Berhampur University seeks to take long strides in harnessing the outcome of teaching and research in various fields by way of ensuring inclusive growth and proving itself to be a Center of Excellence in higher education. It further envisions taking up the social responsibility towards the total uplift of the society at large by providing quality education in consonance with the motto of the University, i.e., "Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya", which means "Lead me from darkness unto light".

About the NSS (NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University levelto take part in various Government led community service activities & programmes. The primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS.
Objectives
The Objectives of the NSS are:
1. To understand the community in which they work.
2. To understand themselves in relation to their community.
3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
5. Utilize their knowledge in generating practical solution to individual and community problems.
6. Develop competence required for a group living and sharing of responsibilities.
7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
10. To extend the national integration and social harmony.
Motto of NSS : "Not Me, But You"
The motto of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is "Not Me, But You", which reflects the core philosophy of selfless service, community engagement, and social responsibility. It emphasizes that the welfare of an individual is ultimately linked to the welfare of society as a whole.
Spirit of Selflessness:
The motto encourages NSS volunteers to prioritize the needs of others over personal gains. It instills a sense of social responsibility and motivates students to work towards the upliftment of society.
Promotion of Teamwork & Leadership:
NSS is not just about individual efforts but about collective teamwork. It teaches volunteers to collaborate, coordinate, and lead initiatives that create a meaningful impact in the community.

NSS Symbol
The Emblem of NSS is based on the "Rath" wheel of the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. This giant wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release. And signify the movement in life across time and space. It also stands for dynamism and progressive outlook of youth.
The Konark wheel in the emblem has eight-bars, which represent Eight Pahars in the cycle of 24 hours of the day. Hence, the Badge rewinds the wearer to be readdress for service of the Nations round the clock, i.e. for 24 X 7. The red colour in the Badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood, i.e.lively, active energic and full of high spirit. The Navy-blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
About the NSS Bureau, Berhampur University
NSS has started functioning under Berhampur University in the Year 1970-71 with 350 Volunteers in 08 (Eight) Colleges. Presently the NSS Bureau, Berhampur University is spreading over three Districts with 75 Colleges, 101 Units and 10100 volunteers.The Bureau has been designing and implementing various types of programmes under the supervision of state NSS Cell in the Department of Higher education of Govt. of Odisha & NSS Regional Centre, Bhubaneswar under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.
