U.S. History

Class overview

The eighth-grade Social Studies: U.S. History course uses five big ideas of social studies (government and civics, cultures and societies, economics, geography, and historical perspective) to focus on an integrated approach to the study of U.S. history, from the land and people before Columbus through Reconstruction. Emphasis is placed on the significant events, critical movements, and perspectives of the diverse groups of people. The historical roots of our democratic principles are studied using primary and secondary sources to examine the ideas, ideals, and critical events associated with the founding of our nation. Through the use of inquiry, chronological thinking, and historical analysis, students examine the political, social, and economic dimensions of early U.S. history and make connections between the past and present.

World History

Class overview

Seventh grade world history will include studies about the Roman Empire, The Influence of the Early Christian Church, The Byzantine Empire, Origins and Develops of Islam, African Societies, Imperial China, Japanese Culture, Early Latin American Cultures, & The European Renaissance.

Please note that we will be studying the history of religions and their influences. Beliefs affect action so some overarching beliefs of the major world religions will be discussed in a historic context. I sincerely believe that it is up to each family (not me) to teach or not to teach their particular belief system to their children. I only teach history.

About Me

I discovered my passion for education while working at Camp Agape in Benton, TN during the summer of 1993. I'm a graduate of Morehead State University class of 1999 BA Psychology & Philosophy, 2005 BA Secondary Social Studies & Endorsement for the middle grades, & 2011 MA Secondary Social Studies.

A transplant from Central Appalachia, Bullitt County became my home in 2008. Since then I've taught classes in Arts & Humanities, Leadership, Education Facilitators, Geography, World Civilizations, Psychology, Sociology, AP World, AP Psychology, & U.S. History.

Travel and the experience of new cultures is another passion of mine, I've travelled as far south and west as Australia, as far east as Rome, & as far north as Canada. So far I've seen 36 states & 11 countries and am eager to see many many more!

Most everything that is handed out in class is also posted in my Google Classroom for students and on my Google Drive for those who cannot access GC. The best way to contact me is via email (see below) or you can call the school during my planning time.
