"We love to provide new experiences to our students that can further develop their love for education, animals, and their future. Bullitt Central's Agriculture Department is the Humane Society of Nelson County's first partnership, which is very exciting for us both. Junior, Alicia Konichek, actually helped begin this partnership. She set up meetings with the Humane Society, spoke to them about our goals, and brought this idea to life. This partnership is a great way to provide students with many hands-on lessons from learning to restrain cats, giving vaccines, and physicals on felines and more. The students will also be in charge of taking pictures of each cat and posting them on their Social Media to increase publicity of each cat." -- Ms. Peake

What spurred this partnership? Is this a new development, or has the pathway worked with the Humane Society in the past?
*We love to provide new experiences to our students that can further develop their love for education, animals, and their future. When discussing with my Animal and Vet classes ways to help animals, build a partnership and provide a service to our community, this idea was formed. We have never partnered with the Humane Society before and look forward to this growing partnership. We hope as this new program grows so will other opportunities. We have plans with the Humane Society of Nelson County to grow outreaches, which our students will help develop, job opportunities, and even grow a shadowing program. Victoria and her Team at the Humane Society of Nelson County have been nothing but Wonderful to us.
What does adopting cats to the community consist of?
*The adoption process is very simple. The first step I would tell everyone to do is Like our Bullitt Central High School Facebook page. We will be posting all adoptable cats there for the community to see along with a story about each cat. If someone is interested in meeting one of our felines they can email me at tiphanie.peake@bullitt.kyschools.us. I will set up a time to meet the cat here at Bullitt Central's Agriculture Department. If they wish to proceed with the adoption all paperwork will go through us. The Humane Society of Nelson County will approve all adoption. There are several ways to pay for your cat and I will discuss that on an individual basis with those who are approved. Cats at $80 to adopt which includes, spay/neuter, microchipped and tattooed, along with all shots up to date. There will also be a $20 fee to be paid to Bullitt Central Animal Science Program.
How are the students involved in this effort?
*Junior, Alicia Konichek helped begin this partnership. She set up meetings with the Humane Society, spoke to them about our goals, and brought this idea to life. Students are to keep the living area clean along with feeding each cat daily. Their main goal is to socialize each cat making sure they learn the personality of each adoptable cat. With this, they will be able to make sure the cat finds its perfect forever home. We also study Animal Behavior and Communication. This will be a big part of the cat's lives as my students will focus on their behavior and health of the cat. This partnership is a great way to provide students with many hands-on lessons from learning to restrain cats, giving vaccines, and physicals on felines and more. The students will also be in charge of taking pictures of each cat and posting them on their Social Media to increase publicity of each cat.
Will the Agriculture Pathway and Humane Society see more partnered efforts in the future?
*Yes for sure this partnership will continue to grow from here. Bullitt Central's Agriculture Department is the Humane Society of Nelson County's first partnership, which is very exciting for us both. We have goals for our students to work with them on outreaches in the community and providing shadowing opportunities with their vet. We also hope to have the Humane Society vet working one-on-one with the Veterinary kids within the classroom at Bullitt Central. We hope to be able to give back to them as well, by providing learning materials we have in our classroom to them when needed for training purposes to their staff. Bullitt Central's Ag Department has its own UltraSound Machine, so students will be able to perform ultrasounds on stray dogs/cats that come into the shelter to check for pregnancy.
Bullitt Central’s Agriculture Department is growing again!
At Bullitt Central High School students have the opportunity to pursue many pathways that are offered. Each year as the students progress, so do the pathway classes. This year at BCHS students have learned many new skill sets in the Agriculture Pathway. Bullitt Central’s Agriculture Department and its Animal Science pathway are so excited to announce a brand new partnership with the Humane Society of Nelson County. This partnership has been developed in order to foster cats in our classroom that are up for adoption. The students look forward to finding the cats forever homes while providing the best care to each cat while they are with us. The students’ main goal is to socialize the cats while making sure they learn the personality of each adoptable cat. The students will study animal behavior, communication, and health, all while working alongside with the Humane Society. All cats can be adopted by anyone who is approved through the Humane Society. Victoria Snyder, the office manager and social media coordinator for the Humane Society of Nelson County, expressed that she is excited for this new partnership and eager for students to expand their learning while helping the cats to find their forever homes. We are so excited to announce that the first kitten we had, Freya, was adopted within the first 24 hours of being with us. If you are interested in adopting a cat/kitten please look at our Bullitt Central High School Facebook page for available cats. For more information please contact Mrs. Peake @ tiphanie.peake@bullitt.kyschools.us.
The Mechanics Pathway students are also learning many new skill sets. This pathway has recently acquired a CNC machine which is a large metal cutting machine. Using this machine, the students in the agriculture pathway have been able to learn how to operate the machine as well take part in the business aspect of the operation as they are taking product orders for cut-out metal signs for the school and local community. If you are interested in buying a sign make sure to check the Bullitt Central FFA Chapter Facebook Page (link is on the post from November 12, 2021) for more information.
