Welcome to the 12th Grade English Honors Program! You have been admitted to this course based upon your eleventh grade English teacher’s recommendation and your past academic performance. It is assumed that students enrolled in this program possess a love of reading and demonstrate appreciable skill in expository writing. This course is connected to SUNY Stony Brook's ACE program, in which you have the opportunity to earn SUNY credits as a Stony Brook student! We hope you enjoy the depth and breadth of the summer assignment:
This summer, you will read Frankenstein, the classic 19th century novel by Mary Shelley about Victor Frankenstein’s decision to conduct a scientific experiment that results in a series of moral and ethical dilemmas. You will also read A Doll’s House, a three-act play by Henrik Ibsen that explores the life of Nora Helmer as she struggles to find her identity. While you’re reading Frankenstein and A Doll’s House, pay attention to the controversial questions that are raised by the actions of the characters in both works. Keep dialectic journals for each of these literary works. Here is the document that will explain what is expected. In addition, you will find and read two (2) newspaper and/or magazine articles that relate to each of these works on some level. Briefly summarize the articles and explain how they relate to the literature. Bring in your written materials on the first day of school in September and be prepared for an exam. You will have to write an in-class essay about your reading in the first week back. ***In addition, all honor and AP summer reading assignments will be submitted in hard copy format, as well as Turnitin.com with your teacher’s assistance the first days of school.***
You may check your local library, or download books onto e-reader or Kindle. Our school library may have a limited number of the required books, as well.
Enjoy the reading. Have an enjoyable, safe, and productive summer, and we will see you in September!
