Please arrive as close to 5:30 pm as possible to facilitate registration and get everyone settled in their rooms. Moderators and scorekeepers should report to the registration area for their room assignments and materials. Adult team leaders, students, and parents should go directly to their assigned rooms for Round #1.
An initial welcome will be made over the school public address system. An estimated timetable for activities follows:
5:30 pm Registration & Reporting to Rooms
6:00 pm First Round begins
6:45 pm Second Round begins
7:30 pm Third Round begins
8:30 pm Awards in Round 3 Room via PA System (The Senior event will have in-person awards in the Auditorium.)
8:50 pm Departure
Teams may be composed of between eight (8) and sixteen (16) students. However, no more than 12 students may participate during each round, with the remaining students as alternate players. The composition of the team may not change after a round has begun. All team members should participate in at least two rounds and no team member should sit out for more than one round. Teams of mixed age, gender and reading ability are encouraged.
Plan to have large teams, so that a child moving out of the school or being ill on the night of the event does not handicap a team. Once you have registered, you may not combine teams if students drop out. If absolutely necessary, it would be permissible to shift team members from one team to another as long as you send the same number of teams as registered.
Building assignments cannot be finalized until after team registration is complete. Scheduling such a large event is a tedious task; we have to keep building capacity in mind for the safety of all attendees. While we do our best to consider geographic location, we cannot guarantee building assignments. We thank you in advance for understanding that this is a large annual event and appreciating the problems that would be caused if we gave out premature building assignments. Building assignments will be posted when they are finalized.
Reading Olympics recommends that you finalize ALL team information at the time of team registration. Pertinent changes can be requested and we will do our best to make the changes. Once materials have been printed, typically four weeks prior to the event, no changes can be made. Team participant lists are posted on a wall by the registration table on the night of event. If you need to add a student's name, please do so at that time. The only reason student's names are posted is to help parents find their child's team.
There is no reason to notify us if there is a change in the teacher traveling with the team.
Please tell the new moderator/scorekeeper to check-in at the registration table when they arrive to collect their materials. They should provide the LAST name of the person they are replacing. Please make sure the replacement person has read the guidelines related to their assignment and understands what they are supposed to do.
Notify Reading Olympics immediately! Once registered, attendance is mandatory. If a team drops out or does not show on their event night, they will directly impact the experience of the three teams they were scheduled to compete against.
The moderator/scorekeeper from this team must still attend. We need them to cover the room that they were assigned to.
The team registration fee will not be refunded.
Reading Olympics recommends that you finalize ALL team information by the close of registration. At this point, we begin scheduling and printing materials for the competition.
