Welcome to 7th Grade at Buckeye Junior High

A Note from Mrs. Conley-Kurjian

Entering Junior High is such an exciting time for you and your child and I couldn't be more excited to share this time with you as the Junior High Principal. While we may not know right now what school will look like in the Fall, this is what I know for sure: your student will be welcomed to the Junior High by a warm and loving staff who are experts in helping preteens make this transition. This newsletter is the first of monthly newsletters you will receive from the Junior High and are designed to summarize what has happened and what will happen in our building. You can find the newsletter in your email if you have updated Registration Gateway in August. Our website also has useful information and the latest newsletters can be found there.

Mrs. Shannon Conley-Kurjian

Principal Buckeye Junior High

2020-2021 will be my second year at Buckeye as principal at the Junior High. I have loved making this transition. Our building staff is like a family and we treat our students like our own. Students will find me in the main office behind Mrs. Coyne. My email is sconley@buckeyeschools.org

Mrs. Brittany Cates

School Guidance Counselor

Some of your students remember me from my visit down to elementary a few times to discuss schedules for this year. I am so excited to have all of your students and I cannot wait to see what this year brings. Please know you can reach out to me at any time. My office is behind Mrs. Simmerly in the main office. The easiest way is through email at bcates@buckeyeschools.org

NEWS AND NOTES

Orientation

As of right now it is scheduled that seventh grade students may pick up their schedules at the Junior High and tour the building on Tuesday, August 11th at 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Schedules will also be distributed on the first day of school as well. This is of course tentative pending any updates via COVID-19 but students will still receive their schedule that day in some format. I look forward to navigating this new time together and working in collaboration for your student to feel and have success in 7th grade!

Parent Contact Information

To ensure we have the most up to day contact information for your student should we need to call or email you, please review what we have on file and mark that it is updated through our Registration Gateway online portal. Click here if your student was enrolled at Buckeye for 6th grade. Click here if you are a new student to Buckeye Local Schools. Your username is your student ID (this is the same number as your child's lunch code, and it is available on report cards, in Progress Book, and in PayForIt) & your password is your student's birthday (MM/DD/YYYY) make sure to include the backslashes.

No computers can be issued to your student if this is not updated.

Immunizations

CDC guidelines are such that updated immunizations must be on file with the school. To enter 7th grade, a current record of updated meningococcal and Tdap needs to be sent to the school before September. The most up to date guidelines can be found at the Medina County Health Department by clicking here. The Health Department will also assist in providing you with access to immunizations, click here for more information.

School Supplies

We are using a school supply service this year to assist you and our teachers to be prepared with needed items for Fall classes. This service will not only raise a few additional funds for special student events at school, but is also designed to provide you with an easy one stop shop for school supplies! You heard that right, you can skip the busy stores in August and have your student supplies delivered right to the school with your child's name on it. If we are teaching virtually, we will have school supplies ready to hand out with computers. Click here to order your supplies!

ORDER BEFORE JULY 1, 2020

Online Tech Help

Buckeye Local Schools is one of the leaders in the county when it comes to technology. Buckeye Junior High offers every student a Chromebook to take to and from school. Teachers have relied many Google Apps for teaching and learning long before it was required with the Co-Vid 19 pandemic. In the Fall, regardless of face to face or virtual environments, your student will be issued a Chromebook and charging cord. These will be passed out closer to the first day of school. Our district tech department maintains a robust page for parent tech support and can be accessed here.

School Lunches

Pay For It is a service offered to add money to your student’s lunch account and pay schools fees. Lunches are $3.50. Charging lunches is not encouraged and this service helps you easily keep your student’s lunch account up to date. Don’t hesitate to check your eligibility for free or reduced lunch by clicking here. Forms will also be available at schedule pick up August 12. School fees will be available for payment through Pay For It or check to the office by early October. Find Pay For It on the website or by clicking here. Course fees will be added after the first grading period ends.

Transportation

Most students ride the bus to the Junior High. Bus pick up and drop off happens in the rear of the building and students enter through the cafeteria. Students are only permitted to ride their assigned bus each day to and from school. Requests to ride home with a friend may not be honored due to seat availability. Please call ext. 1019 with any questions you may have about bussing.

Car drop off and pick up happens in the front of the building. If you drop your student off in the morning, you can do so as early as 7:15 and students will wait in the cafeteria until the bell rings. Enter our lot from Wolff Road, drive to the front door (pull up as far as possible), students will walk on the sidewalk next to the building and enter the main doors. Exit the lot to Columbia Rd only if you are traveling South. Left hand turns are prohibited from our lot to 252. If you are traveling North, exit to Wolff Road. For afternoon pick up, please park your car in any available space in the front lot only. Students will exit the building through the front door.

Dress Code

The Buckeye Junior High School dress code is a result of ongoing evaluation of year-to-year experiences. The objective of the dress code is to provide an appropriate educational environment while allowing students to dress comfortably within limits to facilitate learning. Students’ attire can have a positive or negative effect on the learning process, contribute to students’ success, and generate a safe and positive learning environment. We expect students to maintain the type of appearance that is not distracting to students, teachers, or the educational process of Buckeye Junior High School:

A general rule when shopping: all shirts should have some type of sleeve and student bodies from just below the collarbone to 3 inches above the knee should be covered. There are more specific guidelines for the dress code outlined in the handbook found on the Buckeye Junior High Website.

Lockers

Your 7th grade students will be issued a school locker. They will be very nervous about this. We will help them learn their locker combination and healthy organizational habits. If your child is extra anxious about the locker, one solution might be to practice the process of opening a 3 digit combination lock prior to the school year.

Please remind students the importance of keeping their lockers locked.

Buckeye Junior High does not allow cell phones in the building. If a cell phone is a family necessity, the phone must remain in a locked locker and Buckeye Local Schools does not assume responsibility for it's safe keeping.
