External Fellowships
Reasons to apply for outside fellowships:
1) Often they pay better than BU fellowships.
2) Sometimes you have to give up your BU fellowship when you, say, leave for a year.
3) They are good CV builders.
4) It’s good practice for writing grant proposals.
Tips for being successful in your fellowship application:
1) Have peer application reading sessions.
2) Look at past applications, both successful and unsuccessful. (These can often be found online, and if not, try asking for them.)
3) When you ask people to write letters for you, ask them IN PERSON, so that you can judge exactly how warmly they feel about it.

Other fellowship databases (hosted by other schools, but still applicable to BU): Columbia, Duke, Cornell, UCLA, Michigan State
Here is a list of fellowships for graduate research in science and engineering (which, for many items on the list, includes economics).
