Navigating the Realities of Generative AI in K-12

In this introductory session, K-12 teachers will build a foundational understanding of how AI actually works and how it can be intentionally leveraged to support professional tasks. We will explore the dual nature of this technology, celebrating its potential for beneficial impact while candidly addressing the critical risks-from the rise of social AI companions and deep fakes to the often-overlooked environmental and financial costs. Overview: How do we ensure that generative AI serves as a catalyst for student inquiry rather than a replacement for critical thought? This session moves beyond basic tool exploration to focus on the intentional "co-use" of AI, grounded in the work of Liz Kolb's Triple E Framework to ensure technology effectively Engages, Enhances, and Extends learning goals. We will examine practical "human-in-the-loop" workflows that require students to remain the primary drivers of their own intellectual work. Participants will explore specific instructional strategies to preserve critical thinking and academic integrity, shifting the classroom focus from AI-generated outputs to the student-led process of inquiry and evaluation. This session is designed for secondary teachers that have a district approved Generative AI tool for student use during the instructional day.
