Here, parent and museum educator Renée Gokey shares simple ways to make the responsibility less daunting. In addition to briefly describing strategies for learners K–12, Renée links to teaching resources from the museum and other organizations. And she notes that students can use Thanksgiving and their new tools for thinking about culture to learn and share more about their own family’s history and traditions.

Decolonizing Thanksgiving in Your ClassroomThanksgiving is a holiday that has historically marginalized and misrepresented Indigenous people in the United States. Much of this harm has been perpetuated in school settings. In this workshop, educators will begin to learn how they can decolonize their classroom practices specifically around Thanksgiving. Participants will hear diverse Indigenous perspectives on Thanksgiving. Resources and practices for affirming Native American peoples and tribal nations will be shared before, during, and after the workshop. Helen Thomas, an educator of Lakota heritage, led an excellent workshop on "Decolonizing Thanksgiving in Your Classroom". The resources are comprehensive, beautifully organized, and include specific lessons for every grade band: Primary, Elementary, Middle School and High School. Her resources are organized to both build a teacher's background knowledge and to provide a ready-made approach to teaching about Thanksgiving. The resources are still available, including the video recording of the webinar, and are well worth the $25 fee if you don't want to take the time to browse and vet resources personally. - Suzzuk
