What engineering class do I take as a freshman?
Introduction to Engineering Design
The first course in our pre-engineering pathway has students use a 3D-modeling software to create designs for various problems throughout the year. We fabricate some of those designs using 3D printing and laser cutting/engraving. This course offers college credit to interested and eligible students through Clark State University. Link to official PLTW website for IED Pictured on the left is a student designed drone frame (for Aerospace Engineering) that students used their 3D-modeling skills from IED to create.
Check out the projects tab to see projects we have completed in the past in our classes and club.
What courses follow IED at Bellbrook High School?
Principles of Engineering
2nd year of Engineering Pathway available after IED
Students learn about various engineering concepts through Project Based Learning.
Digital Electronics
3rd year of Engineering Pathway available after POE
Students learn to solder, wire, and program circuit boards through numerous projects.
College credit available for this course.
Usually picked as the favorite of all the Engineering courses.
Aerospace Engineering
Extra elective engineering course. This option is available to students who have finished IED.
Students design and build projects all while learning about concepts pertaining to Aerospace.
Civil Engineering & Architecture
Extra elective engineering course.
This option is available to students who have finished IED.
Students design various residential and commercial buildings using a 3D-modeling software while learning about Civil Engineering and Architecture concepts.
College credit available for this course.
Senior Level
-Engineering Design & Development
-EGR1010
The 4th year of Engineering Pathway. Available to students who have taken Digital Electronics and are eligible through their math and science experience. In this course students work all year identifying a problem and then designing a solution following the design process throughout. At the end of the year students present their projects to a panel of professionals.
Along with this course students will also be enrolled in and take an engineering math course here at BHS taught by a Wright State professor 1st semester during this same class period.
FAQ's
Can I take multiple engineering courses in a year?
If your schedule has the room, yes.
Do I have to take the four pathway (IED, POE, DE, EDD) courses?
Students must start with IED, but if they do not want to be a program completer or are an upperclassmen coming in late they may take the two extra engineering courses in any order they choose.
What is a Program Completer?
Students who complete IED, POE, DE, and EDD/EGR1010 in their four years of high school.
Where can I get more information on what PLTW engineering courses are?
Do I have to take the courses for college credit?
IED, DE, and CEA no. You can just enroll in the course. EDD/EGR the EGR1010 course is required to take EDD so the college credit is mandatory for that course. The other courses do not have applicable college credit at this time.
Is there a lot of homework in these courses?
We want our students to be able to focus their efforts at home on their core classes so homework is not assigned in our courses (outside of EGR1010). However, students must work during class time to avoid falling behind and being forced to complete projects/assignments outside of class. The classes can be challenging, but as long as students apply their best they will find success in each course.
STEM Club
STEM Club is open to students taking engineering courses at BHS. It is a space for students to deepen their learning from class and explore other STEM related interests through activities and projects.
Current Official STEM Club Meeting Times for the 2019/2020 school year:
- Before School Tuesday starting at 7:00 AM
- After School Monday through Thursday until 3:45 PM
**Meetings are not mandatory. We want to offer flexibility for students with busy schedules.
