We had the opportunity to have two students attend the MASC Convention to community build and develop their leadership skills further! One of our students, Brayden Hamilton, was honored for her great leadership work within our school as Vice President of the SGA and a student leader in the Black Student Union
At the Winter General Assembly we had many students attend from our school to learn from other students and organizations. One of our students, Micah Berger-Sollod. helped to lead a session on School Newspapers and Journalism. We also had students who are members of the ASCBC Board attend and support the event, Commissioner Quinn Katz-Zogby and Shamir Burg.
During our elections for the 2022-2023 school year, we had a hotly contested race for President and Vice President. During the initial stages of campaigning one of our candidates, Quinn Katz-Zogby, decided to drop out of the race. As he communicated this to us, he also expressed disappointment about not being able to be involved in SGA for his senior year. We gave him the flyer for the ASCBC open positions. We spoke extensively with Quinn about the positions and different options he had until he settled on running for Student Commissioner. After he was elected, we continued to support Quinn inside and outside of the school. We attended the virtual meetings and cheered him on. We also spoke frequently about policies and helped him with his speeches.
As a freshman at BSA this year, Shamir was intimidated by the idea of running for an SGA office but really wanted to be involved. We gave him the flyer for the ASCBC open positions. We spoke extensively with Shamir about the positions and different options he had until he settled on running for Chief of Staff or Member at large. He attended the interest sessions after receiving emails we forwarded from the district. We supported Shamir in attending the conferences and communicated with the school regarding his excused absences for these activities.
Students at BSA gave feedback and were informed about the votes coalition through direct emails from the SGA co-advisors. We worked to inform students and our community about the work to expand student commissioner voting rights and ASCBC rights through Senate Bill 31. We continued to reach out to all students in our community, not just SGA members, about opportunities to get involved with the district student government efforts.
