Calvó-Armengol Prize Lecture

Professor Johannes Stroebel’s work has reshaped how economists think about social interactions and their economic consequences

The Barcelona School of Economics and the Government of Andorra have announced that the ninth Calvó-Armengol International Prize in Economics will be awarded to Johannes Stroebel.

Johannes Stroebel is the David S. Loeb Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University (NYU). He received his PhD in Economics from Stanford University and his undergraduate degree from the University of Oxford. He is a recipient of the Fischer Black Prize from the American Finance Association, a Sloan Research Fellowship, and a Carnegie Fellowship.

The Calvó-Armengol Prize Selection Committee chose Professor Stroebel for his pioneering contributions to our understanding of how social connections, beliefs, and interactions shape economic and financial outcomes.

The Prize Selection Committee members for this edition of the Calvó-Armengol Prize were Professors Antonio Cabrales (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), who served as Chair; Melissa Dell (Harvard University and Calvó-Armengol Prize Laureate); Benjamin Golub (Northwestern University and Calvó-Armengol Prize Laureate); and Joan Llull (IAE-CSIC and BSE).

“By recognizing Professor Stroebel with the Calvó-Armengol Prize, the Barcelona School of Economics and the Government of Andorra continue promoting frontier research with the potential for real impact in society and honoring the memory of Antoni Calvó-Armengol,” Professor Cabrales said.

About the Calvó-Armengol International Prize in Economics

The Calvó-Armengol International Prize memorializes Antoni Calvó-Armengol, who passed away in 2007 at 37 years of age. A native of Andorra, Calvó-Armengol was a professor at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Barcelona School of Economics who made outstanding contributions in social economics.

The Calvó-Armengol Prize is awarded every two years to an economist or other social scientist who is not older than 40 years old for their contributions to the understanding of social structure and its implications for economic interactions.

The Prize is promoted by the Barcelona School of Economics and the Government of Andorra. This edition receives support from the Severo Ochoa Research Excellence Program.
