Work-based learning is an educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences that enhance and complement their academic instruction. The intent of work-based learning is to have students apply the skills and content knowledge they have learned in their technical programs to real-life employment settings, while simultaneously helping them to develop new skills while working hands-on with professionals and employers in their technical field. The primary goals of work-based learning experiences (WBLE) are to create career awareness, and provide real-world work experience.
The best jobs in the 21st Century require not only technical skills and knowledge, but also the ability to work effectively with others. In participating in work-based learning experiences (WBLE), students work with established professionals. In doing so, they gain not only technical skills and knowledge, but the essential skills of when and how to discuss workplace issues, how to present oneself in the workplace, how to interact with others, and other essential skills. While in WBLE, a student's cultural and social capital grows. In addition to increasing their "toolbox" for success, their network of professional contacts increase, thus increasing their connections to those in the field that can help them develop their economic capital.
