The James Wooden Memorial scholarship is awarded to a Barnwell High School senior football player selected by the Barnwell Warhorse Club. This memorial scholarship is given in memory of James Wooden. He was often referred to as Big James, but standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 330lbs, he was really a gentle giant.
While in high school, James was a successful student-athlete. He was inducted into the Beta Club and participated in various sports, including track, weightlifting, and football. He received several football scholarship offers, including Tennessee, Georgia, and the University of South Carolina. James had goals after high school graduation, including attending the University of Tennessee to major in auto mechanics and business. He wanted to run his own auto repair company after his NFL career ended. Unfortunately, James passed away and was unable to fulfill his dreams. If James were here and could leave a closing remark to each athlete, he would say, “If you think it, it can be done; just do it!”
