Today is National AVID Day, a day celebrated across the country to recognize the impact of the AVID program—Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID helps students develop the skills necessary for success in college, careers, and beyond. It’s all about encouraging hard work, goal-setting, and believing in your future!

Today, September 12, marks AVID Day. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This day is dedicated to showcasing how AVID empowers educators, students, and communities to prepare all learners for college, careers, and beyond. Shout out to all the students and staff wearing college and university gear.
On this day in U.S. History. On September 12, 1992, Dr. Mae C. Jemison, an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, was the first African American Woman to go into Space aboard the space shuttle Endeavour (in-dev-or). During the 190 hours she spent in space, she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness. Beyond her historic spaceflight, she founded The Jemison Group, Inc., a company that researches and develops advanced technologies, and she currently leads the 100 Year Starship project, which aims to make interstellar travel possible for humans in the next century. She's also a celebrated public speaker and author.

This Day in History. September 11th is Patriot Day. This day honors the memory of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims who died on September 11, 2001 in devastating terror attacks. On Patriot Day, U.S. flags are lowered halfway, and six moments of silence are observed with the first at 8:46 am and the last at 10:28 am. Today, we remember those who we lost and give thanks to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line.

At dismissal, please head to the cafeteria. You MUST have your DIAA form completed and turned into the nurse to participate in try outs, which will be next week!

This Day in History. On September 10, 1913, the Lincoln Highway was announced by its creator, Carl Fisher, as the United States' first coast-to-coast highway, designed to improve roads for cars traveling across the country from New York to San Francisco.

Attention, students and staff. Please listen carefully to these important reminders for end of day dismissal.
Students with Lockers: Your last chance to visit your locker is during the final class change of the day. For example, today is a 1-Day, so you must get what you need from your locker when you leave your Period 5 class. You will not be allowed to go to your locker at dismissal.
After-School Activities: All students staying after school for any activity must go directly to the cafeteria at the end of the day. If you are in the West Wing, you must use Stairway D to get to the cafeteria. All staff holding after-school activities must pick up their students directly from the cafeteria.
Dismissal Exits: Bus riders should use the stairs leading to the back of the building, and walkers or car riders should use the stairs leading to the front. Remember, you are not allowed to cross over to the opposite side of the building after the final bell.
This Day in History. On September 8, 1954, Ruby Bridges was born. At the age of 6, she became the first Black student to integrate a white elementary school in New Orleans in 1960. Now, she is a civil rights activist, author, and the founder of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which promotes tolerance and equality through education. In 2024, Ruby was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
