Nolan Manahan and Cooper Myers
Two BCS gifted-identified students, 6th grader Nolan Manahan and 7th grader Cooper Myers, took advantage of an enriching experience by attending OWL Camp this summer.
Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, OWL is “a residential and day camp program of challenge and enrichment for Ohio's gifted and talented school students currently (at time of application) in grades 5-8. Campers attending OWL select four courses from an academic program that includes mathematics, logic, computing, science, humanities, and creative development. Cultural, recreational, and social activities round out the experience”(OWL Camp). Applicants are required to submit an essay and upload their application by the end of January to be considered.
Nolan attended the day camp and enjoyed sessions each day on microbiology, mythology, and art. His last session each day was “Camp Half-Blood” which was a Percy Jackson-themed experience. He commented that it was exciting and challenging to be in a college classroom with a real college professor and using their scientific equipment.
Cooper participated in the 5-day residential experience and also attended the “Camp Half-Blood” and a different mythology class, but added a survival skills and Dungeons & Dragons 101 experience. In the survival skills class, he got to filter water from the river and make s’mores on a fire he built.
Both boys met new friends and said they were the only ones from 3 hours away as many of the kids came from the Columbus area. Overall, it was a fun and exciting week of new experiences for both boys, and they said they’d attend again if given the chance.
Interested students and families can learn more on their website and start the application process soon.
Ethan receiving his certificate and scholarship from Mrs. Zuver on May 19, 2025
Each year, the Northwest Ohio Consortium of Coordinators for Gifted (NWOCCG) offers a scholarship award for gifted students across Northwest Ohio. The scholarship is presented to applicants who demonstrate a strong passion or interest in a specific area. Students must demonstrate that passion through an essay describing how this award will help support or enhance their passion and include specific details as to what they will spend it on. This year, five applicants were selected from entries across Northwest Ohio, and Bryan City Schools has one student selected as a recipient.
Ethan Fryman is a sophomore passionate about languages and will use his scholarship to purchase French and Greek language texts to further his study.
Congratulations to Ethan!
