We’re excited to share a new approach to summer reading for our middle school students! Based on valuable feedback from students, parents, and teachers, we’ve created a summer reading challenge designed to foster a love of reading while helping to prevent the “summer slide.”
For students entering grades 6–8, our goal is simple: read for 20 minutes each day. Research consistently shows that just 20 minutes of daily reading can significantly improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to choose reading material that interests them and aligns with their grade-level reading ability. This can include novels, nonfiction, graphic novels, articles—anything that keeps them engaged.
Students will log their reading minutes each day, focusing on consistency and enjoyment over specific titles or assignments.
For students taking the 9th grade Enhanced Literature and Composition Course, we will continue with a more traditional summer reading assignment to align with high school and honors-level expectations.
We’re hopeful this new format for middle school will empower students to read more freely and find joy in the process. Thank you for your continued support in helping your child grow as a reader!
