Class Overview
Special Education is a specialized approach to education that addresses the unique needs of students with disabilities or exceptionalities. The main goal of special education is to provide these students with the necessary support, accommodations, and interventions to help them access an appropriate education and reach their fullest potential.
About Me
Education:
I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor's degree in English and elementary education. I also have a Master's Degree in school counseling from Western Michigan University. I have taught all ages, from preschool to college. I love working with special needs students and am excited to be teaching special education this year!
Family:
I am originally from Michigan, but I have also lived in Maryland and Oregon before moving to Georgia because my husband is in the Coast Guard. I have been married to my husband, Chris, for 22 years. We have 3 daughters, Audrey, Cora, and Elyse. We also have a dog named Daisy, and a cat named Buttercup.

Course Description: The Special Education Classroom aims to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students with diverse learning needs. This course is designed to promote academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development while fostering a sense of belonging and self-confidence.
Course Objectives:
To address individual learning needs and promote academic progress for each student.
To develop students' communication and social skills to enhance their interactions with peers and adults.
To encourage self-advocacy and independence among students.
To create a positive and respectful classroom community that values diversity and inclusion.
To collaborate with parents/guardians and other professionals to support each student's overall development.
Course Materials: The materials for this class will be provided by the teacher based on individualized education plans (IEPs) and specific learning goals.
Grading Policy: Grading in the special education classroom will focus on individual progress and achievement rather than traditional letter grades. Progress will be assessed through various methods, including teacher observation, informal assessments, and performance on adapted assignments.
Course Outline: The following topics and areas will be covered during the course:
Academic Instruction:
Individualized instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and other academic areas as per students' IEPs.
Differentiated teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles.
Assistive technologies and tools to support learning.
Social Skills:
Building communication and social interaction skills.
Practicing conflict resolution and problem-solving techniques.
Encouraging cooperation and teamwork.
Emotional and Behavioral Development:
