The Inca road system was important because it allowed for easy transportation and easy trading. The road system made it easier to do things throughout the empire. Without the road system they could not have gotten around the Inca empire as easily. The roads stretched over 40,000 miles, and they went everywhere throughout the empire. It was a very harsh job to build the road system. Many gave their lives for the Incas to have roads. The roads were built out of stones and the bridges were made out of woven grass and sticks. The Incas laid stones that matched closely together to make a tight fit and then they put gravel in the cracks. This was very effective because all off the water from the rain or snow would go into the cracks and drain off to the side.
This is a picture of the Inca roads. They did not go straight up the mountain or hill, instead they went from side to side, which made them easier to travel on.
Also, the roads varied side to side up the mountain instead of going straight up. This made it easier for the people and animals to walk up the mountain instead of having to go straight up the mountain, which was probably very tiring and long. The Incas weren’t afraid to build through or on anything. They built the roads over swamps and on mountains over 6,000 feet in elevation. They built over causeways with stone structures that could hold the weight of the road. It had a very positive impact on the Incas. It improved the way they traded, and the way the empire was. They could deliver messages and use animals to transport goods. The Inca road system modernized the empire. It helped the surrounding areas learn how to build roads, so it made surrounding areas more modernized. The Inca road system made their empire very modernized over the surrounding areas.
