Funding Proposal

Statement of Need By: Mayte Ortega

Lack of education has led to major misconceptions around the world about what this technology does. As well with the issue of people being uninformed of what 3D organ printing is and how it impacts people. We want to combat this by educating kids on what this technology is, what it does, and why it is important to be aware of. We decided that educating children on this topic early on will benefit us in the way of hopefully getting them more involved as well as introducing them to this world problem. If people aren't educated on this, they have no way of knowing what's going on or how this widely affects the world. By educating them we can answer any questions they could possibly have, possibly get them into a career regarding this topic, and most importantly enough, to inform them on current world issues dealing with this. The whole main purpose of 3D printing is to save lives. For example approximately 17 people die every day as a result of waiting for an organ transplant. By getting more people educated and involved in this we can save lives. Our plan is one that will be fun, interactive, as well as informative.

Goals By: Lent Maqani

Our goal in a group is to accomplish hosting a field trip to UVA and performing a STEAM project, informing high school students on the importance of organ transplantation. Also inform them how much we can benefit from 3D printing.

Budget By: Mayte Ortega

The things we would have to take into consideration is how much we are going to spend on this project. We will have to put together the costs of food, transportation, UVA event booking cost, the cost of activity materials, and the speaker who will be there. The budget is a big component to this plan as everything has to be calculated accordingly. For food we are looking into catering food from Chick-Fil-A which will consist of sandwiches, nuggets, fruit platters, bottles of water, and also desert (cookies and brownies). This came out to $2,659.06. We have also chosen 3 selected schools that will have the given opportunity to receive round trip transportation with charter buses from the school to the UVA site. The total was $5,157.68. UVA also gave us an estimate on amount to rent space we were given a $1,500 estimate.  We also researched on Jennifer A. Lewis and concluded that she would be an amazing guest speaker to have so we have chosen to book her which was $25,000. For our STEM activity we have chosen to do a lego inspired set up which amounted t0 be $1,948.50. Our final grand total was $36,265.24

Transportation grand total $5,157.68

Total for food- $2,659.06

Rent of UVA space- $1,500

Estimated cost of Jennifer A. Lewis as a guest speaker- $25,000

Materials for STEM activities- $1,948.50

Grand Total- $36,265.24

Specific Proposed Actions By: Lent Maqani

The format of this informative trip will take place at UVA, we will have access to UVA's bio-printing lab and allow students to learn and grow on the information of organ transplants. We will provide transportation from different areas over three days. Each bus will provide anywhere from 50 seats per school. When we arrive on campus at UVA the students will take a before and after survey on how informed they are and if so are they interested. We will cater Chick- Fil A for the students and run a STEAM project during the informative trip. Students will do different variations of projects involving bioprinting and organ transplants. The trip will be throughout three different days and three different schools, each school will be provided the same service and information. The students will have access to transportation there and back to school grounds. Prior to the field trip students will be asked to fill out a before survey involving the trip. There will also be guest speakers informing the children about the subject.
