In these times of despair about the future of life on our planet, we all need ways to find joy and to show gratitude and give meaning and purpose to our small lives.
In our small village, perched on the escarpment of north-east NSW, a few of us have got together for regular 'crafternoons'. We have combined the above with laughter, talk, food and drinks to bring you this modest offering.
Our sets of 15 small prayer flags, feature issues we are passionate about. Several carry the logos of small groups, beavering away trying to save forests or koalas or whales. Some are trying to stop the destruction of precious places or the expansion of destructive industries.
All the materials for the flags have been donated by us... so that 100% of sales can be sent to the campaigns we have featured. In our wildest dreams we see streets festooned with these prayers for our planet. Sending messages of hope and resistance to passersby and governments.
We haven't strived for perfection, we've focussed on the intention. We are not artists. Our attempt is basic but carried out with love.
Most of the campaigns are powered by volunteers and they make their donations go a long way. Your purchase of our 'prayer' flags will inject much needed funds at this time when donations are in short supply. We had a laugh last week at the idea - you make a $30 donation for our causes and we'll send you a set of these flags as a receipt!
See below for a selection of flags and causes...
Every $100 that comes in, we'll rotate through our causes and send it off, with a little prayer for our planet that collectively we can all make enough difference to save the fabulous diversity of live on earth and the integrity of her lands and waters. You can see where we have donated by visiting out Money Donated page.
For details on how to order, go to our 'About' page.
To see some of the flags flying go to our Gallery page. To see yours there send us a photo!
We start with the Voice from the Heart. We pay our respects to the First Nations peoples across this land, we offer our respect to the elders past, present and emerging, and we also offer our gratitude for their strength and resilience that helps us all find the path to respect our Mother Earth.
Our first $100 and every 10th payment will go to a First Nations peoples campaign. We are open to your suggestions.
No Gas, Lock the Gate, No Water No Life and Frack Off
The Great Artesian Basin Protection Group are determined to save the largest freshwater aquifer in the world. It's a giant water reservoir underneath much of Queensland, NSW and South Australia. It's being damaged and depleted by mining and drilling for fossil fuels. Much of inland eastern Australia relies on the GAB for water. No Water, No Life.
The Pilliga Forest is at the southern end of the GAB. The forest and surrounding farmlands are threatened with a major gasfield development. Friends of the Pilliga have been steadfastly opposing the fracking (and before that the logging) of the Pilliga Forest. With the recent approval of the Independent Planning Commission to allow Santos' 850 gas wells to go ahead, this campaign will be hotting up.
NEFA has been campaigning for the protection of the precious forests of NE NSW for more than 30 years. They work on a shoestring budget but their impact has been mighty. Their ground-breaking legal actions, green-policing and direct action has been the training ground and inspiration for campaigners around the country.
Stop Adani, no reef no me
The massive Adani coal mine being built in the Galilee Basin in Queensland is a climate wrecker. At a time when we absolutely need to be building green and renewable this fossil of a mine is the opposite of what our planet needs.
Front Line Action on Coal have been at the front line of actions against the mine, working with the Traditional Owners and doing what they can to slow down construction. The Great Barrier Reef and all its Nemo's and other glories, is already in big trouble. More coal mines means no more reef.
GECO
Goongerah Environment Centre can be found in East Gippsland, Victoria. They have been campaigning for the protection of those mighty forests since 1993. They do lots of citizen science and education work, and aren't afraid of direct action when needed.
Where do we start. The oceans are what makes our planet appear as a blue jewel in the solar system. They are filling with plastic and emptying of fish and other marine life. Seismic testing is the forerunner of major offshore oil and gas exploration. More fossil fuels that Mother Earth needs to have kept in the ground.
POCA wants to protect the coast from the Mid-north coast where we live, to Sydney.
Are seeking to protect the Bimblebox Nature Refuge and all Protected Areas from mining.
The nature reserve will be razed to the ground if mining billionaire Clive Palmer gets his coal mine under construction. This mob are fighting Palmer's mine in court and need all the help they can get.
No Nukes- Nuclear Free Campaign
The Friends of the Earth nuclear-free campaign has been providing information about the nuclear industry and promoting safer solutions for over 40 years. With One Notion and The Nationals pushing a nuclear platform for NSW, it's important we don't forget that nuclear waste takes tens of thousands of years to break down. That's some toxic legacy we'd rather not bequeath to future generations.
We live near the Bulga Forest. Much of the area burned last year in the fires that wiped out millions of animals. Despite the fires, logging is scheduled to re-commence any day. We've found evidence of a couple of koala survivors, but that makes no difference to the loggers. Trees are just dollars to them. Local group Wingham Forest Action has been around since 1989.
Peace
If we had peace, there would be no need for people to flee the tyranny in their countries. We feel only compassion for the Kurds and the Hazara, the Tamils of Sri Lanka, the Rohinga of Myanmar. People in danger because of the culture they were born into. The list grows ever longer, the Uighur, the Tibetans and the Mongolians...
Rural Australians for Refugees strive to return compassion and humanity to Australia's treatment of asylum seekers, and to remind us all, that it could be us asking for a safe haven. How would we feel being locked up indefinitely for the act of asking for help.
We'll be donating to the Taree branch.
