School Nursing and Health Services
Definition of School Nursing:
School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.
The Brown Deer Health Services team ensures the health and safety of all students during the school day. Our district has one full time nurse and health aides who staff the elementary and shared high school/middle school health rooms.
The primary goal is to provide or monitor:
• first aid and illness care
• individualized healthcare plans and nursing coordination (via IEP and 504)
• health education
• health screening
• medication administration
• education around prevention and wellness
