a river, its mouths
by Jesús I. Valles
directed by JaMario Stills
sound design by Sadah Espii Proctor
dramaturgy by Talley Murphy
[You] return to [Your] Hometown in Texas to write about the impact of the increasing cruelty of Customs and Border Patrol on the land and its people. [Your] Hometown, however, is much more interested in talking about what they're calling "The Rio Grande" mermaid, a creature rumored to haunt the river as dead bodies suddenly begin to appear in the desert, accompanied by flurries of moths. Old magics are clawing their way out of the sand, out of the water, into the air, and there [You] are; the river calling to [You].
content warning: this play contains references to mental health issues, violence against migrants, and death.
