To maintain a clean, safe and functional space, all users must follow studio guidelines when using the space. Users who fail to follow guidelines may loose access.
Tools provided in the studio are designated solely for use in the studio and should not leave room N330. The only exception to this rule is the collapsable cart which may be used to transport items to and from the studio.
If you need equipment for use outside of Studio 4, some of the options are:
BAI Checkout: For students in ARTS courses or hosted in the Granoff or Lindemann Centers
IT Service Center Checkout: Available to the entire Brown Community
If we find equipment missing or that you removed it from the room your access may be revoked.
In order to make the studio an effective tool for all users, please return all equipment to its designated home in the studio. Signs and labels are posted to help you return items to their proper location.
No ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic liquids. No aerosols of any kind. This includes acetone, turpentine, oil paints, spray paints, or dry ice/fog machines.
Power tools from outside the studio must be approved before use. This includes circular saws, belt sanders, etc. Contact us at mml@brown.edu.
All surfaces including the floor must be covered if using paint, ink or other liquids.
If your project uses more than a gallon of liquid, or creates a lot of dust, debris, or waste, it needs to be approved prior to beginning. Contact us at mml@brown.edu
Spills, dust or other waste must be cleaned before your reservation is over. Do not leave materials, tools or other belongings in the studio after your leave. For larger spills please inform mml@brown.edu immediately.
If another user finds the space messy or otherwise not in working order, your access may be revoked.
Out of courtesy for the privacy of other users please do not enter the Studio outside of your reservation or without making a reservation.

To protect the equipment in the Studio, the door should remain closed at all times when you are not present. This includes if you need to leave to use the restroom, meet someone, grab something from another space, etc.
Trained users will be allowed to make limited reservations on their own:
Reservations that users can make will be between 1-6 hours long
Reservations can not be made back-to-back
Need more time? Longer projects are possible via our project proposal process
Users can make up to 1 reservation per day, and a maximum of two reservations per week
The studio is intended for the use of creative production, and reservations should reflect that. Some examples of what the studio should not be reserved for the sole purpose are:
Taking zoom meetings
Holding regular club meetings (certain events are ok, but should be cleared by staff by emailing mml@brown.edu)
Having a place to study
Parties or receptions of any kind
Studio 4 is a great choice for showing work in progress. Public events that are advertised to the community at large, like performances, installations, etc require a project proposal.
Small gatherings of invited guests (less than 15 people), such as a critique for a class or and event for a student club do not require pre-approval.
The studio is a constantly changing and evolving space: new equipment gets added, policies change, etc. For that reason, we will be requiring users to renew their training every semester in order to access Studio 4.
Some of the equipment is delicate and some equipment and tools can hurt you or others if not properly used. If you are unsure or want help please contact mml@brown.edu for assistance.
