Preserving an Incomparable Legacy

Archiving the African Diaspora:

The Life and Works of Anani Dzidzienyo

Over the course of the Spring semester, Professor Keisha-Khan Perry has guided a group of dedicated students through the rich and rewarding process of organizing Anani's office. They have learned critical archival skills during a unique survey of the formation of an academic discipline, and have done powerful work to preserve a precious archive. Their work will continue through the summer, and seed fellowship-supported projects in the coming year.

The records in the images above were passed down by Anani to local radio host and former student Dan Kahn '87. He donated this incredible collection of over 200 CDs, 120 LPs and 150 cassettes back to Brown University, and spend some time in March explaining the significance of the collection to the class.

Thanks to Jordan Allums '21, Anani's vast music library is being organized into Spotify playlists. While some of the titles are rare and not yet a part of Spotify's online catalogue, the majority are available to listen using the embedded player to the left.

Be sure to follow the playlist here or on Spotify to keep up with frequent additions as students continue their archival work.
