Students may opt to take Advanced Innovation Courses to fulfill part of their 3 credit Art & Innovation requirement.
Advanced Industrial Arts Elective-One Semester (10th-12th GRADES ONLY).
Prerequisite: Industrial Arts
Advanced Industrial Arts continues the process of engaging with the hands-on study of craft in the Sculpture Studio and Innovation Commons. This course examines the unique relation between traditional and digital fabrication. Students will have the opportunity to design and build objects using various raw materials (wood, steel, and plastics) and material processes (milling, welding, and printing). This class requires 3D Studio as a prerequisite. Students may take more than one semester, as the materials and projects change from semester to semester.
While technology is integrated throughout the course, the end goal is to encourage students to be innovative and recognize their innate creative ability. Growing this awareness allows students to grow and cultivate deeper empathy and appreciation for themselves and the world around them.
Advanced Graphic Design Elective--One Semester.
Prerequisite: Graphic Design
Honors credit. This one-semester course will expand upon the fundamentals of graphic design, including history of design, design composition, the principles of design, semiotics, design process, professional applications, printing, digital editing and layout using the adobe creative cloud. Primarily this course is an exploration of student creativity and development of an understanding of design concepts; technical skills will be addressed thoroughly, but will rely largely on independent research and experimentation. As an advanced course we will place an increased emphasis on working for clients and publishing our work for display/use on campus and in the community.
AP Computer Science Principles Elective--Full Year Prerequisite: Open to 10-12th grade students with at least a 3.0 GPA.
An introductory college-level, full year computing course that introduces students to the breadth of the field of computer science. Students learn to design and evaluate solutions and to apply computer science to solve problems through the development of algorithms and programs. They incorporate abstraction into programs and use data to discover new knowledge. Students also explain how computing innovations and computing systems—including the internet—work, explore their potential impacts, and contribute to a computing culture that is collaborative and ethical. More information is available here.
Advanced Robotics Elective--One Semester.
Prerequisite: Member of Broncobots Robotics Team or instructor approval
Building upon the foundations established in our Introduction to Robotics course, this advanced class is tailored for students who aspire to deepen their expertise in the intricate world of robotics. This course delves into the complex aspects of designing, programming, and operating autonomous robotic systems. Collaborative projects form the core of the course, where students will work in teams to conceptualize, design, and build advanced robotic systems capable of performing complex tasks and responding to environmental variables. These projects will challenge students to apply advanced algorithms for decision-making, problem-solving, and adaptability in dynamic environments.
Advanced Concepts in Design & Technology Elective-One Semester
Prerequisite: Completion of Design and Technology Foundations, Introduction to Robotics, or instructor approval
Applying knowledge gained in previous courses, students will explore enhanced concepts in CAD, coding, circuitry, and fabrication. The course refines problem-solving and creativity skills through intentional design and project-based learning, enabling students to develop and prototype innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Students will have the opportunity to independently design and develop products, creating more complicated and intricate designs while also learning about other fabrication methods. This course is ideal for those interested in the intersecting worlds of design, technology, and digital innovation, providing a platform for students to push the boundaries of their creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Principles of Consumer and Business Finance Elective-One Semester
This elective course focuses on principles of finance, both in the world of the consumer and in the world of business. From learning about bank accounts, credit cards, car and home loans, and financing college tuition costs to learning about how business owners imagine and then finance their businesses, this course will be a nice introduction to the world of finance.
Industry and Entrepreneurialism Elective-One Semester
This course will introduce students to a variety of industries and entrepreneurs in a unique, interactive format. Utilizing a model which brings guest presenters from various industries to class each week, this course gives students the opportunity to hear their career or entrepreneurial stories and then engage in dialogue with them, and then asks students to reflect on what they heard and how that may inform their own future paths, we will endeavor to help students begin to consider their own talents and interests, and how they may lead to a vocation or career path.
Ecological Justice Elective-Full Year
Ecological Justice is a course in which students will take a gratitude based approach to understanding and improving systems in response to the Climate Crisis. By learning about the systems behind our water, transportation, energy, trash disposal, land use, and food students will develop a heightened sense of stewardship for our watershed and biome. Putting their learning into action, students will become active participants in a continuous cycle of improvement and implementation of the school’s Ecological Justice Plan to maximize our positive impact on the environment and community. This course is an opportunity for students interested in sustainability and leadership to create lasting change at Brophy and beyond.
