Brophy’s AI Literacy Framework doesn’t just prepare students to use artificial intelligence, it prepares them to discern how and when to use AI and how to lead with it, guided by faith, justice, and an imperative of keeping human direction and community at the center of everything. Through this framework, we form young men who:

Think critically and create ethically
Seek progress not through efficiency alone, but through purpose
Understand that in an AI-driven world, discernment is more vital than ever

Jesuit education prepares young people to become people of competence, conscience, and compassion. In the age of AI, it must also prepare them to become people of technological discernment.

Four-Year AI Implementation Pathway

The four-year plan below is a road map to AI Literacy. Specific projects will be determined at the department level and implemented by classroom teachers, in community periods, and during other programming. Click to expand each year.

FRESHMAN YEAR: Foundations in Curiosity and Responsibility (click to expand)

Theme: Awareness & Orientation — “What is AI and how does it affect me?”

Core Goals

Build basic awareness of AI tools, definitions, and ethical considerations.
Understand the basics of how Large Language Models work, and that they are subject to hallucinations and wrong information.
Develop an initial understanding of assistive vs. generative AI (Usage Levels 1–3).
Practice academic honesty and transparency in AI use.
Introduce AI citations and reflection as a habit.

Example Projects

Freshmen Team Rooms: Foundational knowledge and AI Usage introduction.
English: Use AI to brainstorm ideas for a personal narrative (Level 1 use), then revise independently. Conversations about tools such as Grammarly and Khanmigo as writing assistants (Level 2 use)
Religious Studies: Explore the concept that words shape us. Students explore how the language and tasks they use with AI reflect their character. Discuss: "Would I speak this way to a teacher? A peer? Why does it matter how I speak to AI?"
Science: Use AI to generate a hypothesis about cell reproduction; reflect on the reliability of its reasoning and check for factual accuracy.
Social Studies: Locate primary resources for a given topic, then use the school’s academic resources to verify and validate those findings.

Freshman Year Focus Areas

SOPHOMORE YEAR: Practice, Collaboration, & Emerging Critical Inquiry (click to expand)

Theme: Engagement & Collaboration — “How can I use AI to think, create, and grow responsibly?”

Core Goals

Refine CTN prompt writing for targeted academic tasks.
Analyze bias and reliability in AI outputs.
Learn to work with AI collaboratively and transparently.
Begin linking AI use to human dignity, community, and digital citizenship.

Example Projects

Social Studies: Use AI to simulate a historic event based on primary resources, then fact-check the experiences based on a peer review of the same resources.
English: Students use teacher-designed AI tutors for writing feedback and compare results to peer-generated recommendations.
Religious Studies: "If AI learns from us, what are we teaching it?" Connect prompt-writing practices (and students’ own prompt history) to how we treat others and wish to be treated, recognizing that our digital habits shape our human relationships.
World Languages: Students use AI tutors to practice speaking and listening skills.
Art & Innovation: Use AI to generate visual inspiration, then reflect on originality vs. assistance in the creative process.
Science: Case studies of chemical engineering accidents (at a level accessible in basic chemistry courses). Reflect on how AI could change the frequency of those accidents

Sophomore Year Focus Areas

JUNIOR YEAR: Integration, Synthesis, and Vocational Reflection (click to expand)

Theme: Discernment & Impact — “How does AI affect my world—and what is my role in shaping that world?”

Core Goals

Critically examine AI’s impact on society (ethics, policy, power).
Integrate AI across disciplines with thoughtful application.
Begin vocational discernment that involves AI in future careers.
Articulate a personal stance on the ethical use of AI.

Example Projects

Science: Use AI to model climate data or air quality; evaluate policy solutions for environmental justice.
English: AI-assisted poetry or rhetorical analysis with citation and critique of AI voice. Using AI to study standard argumentative evidence for essay writing.
Religious Studies: Position paper: “Can AI have a conscience? What do Catholic teachings suggest?”

Junior Year Focus Areas

SENIOR YEAR: Leadership, Stewardship, and Expression (click to expand)

Theme: Stewardship & Leadership — “How do I lead with AI as a tool for human dignity and the common good?”

Core Goals

Demonstrate mastery of AI literacy through leadership, innovation, and mentorship.
Lead ethical conversations and model transparency.
Complete a capstone or integrated project using AI thoughtfully and reflectively.
Articulate a personal digital citizenship ethic rooted in Ignatian values.

Example Projects

Capstone: “Designing an AI tool to support mental health that respects human dignity”
Policy Simulation: Act as members of a Catholic ethics board evaluating an AI policy.
Public Presentation: Students present to peers and families on “My AI Values & Vision”
Any subject: Find a current application of AI or advanced robotics using AI (for example, the BMW plant using a humanoid synthetic line worker, “Figure”, working 10 hours per day for 5 months straight) and view it from the lens of your course/choice

Senior Year Focus Areas

Four-Year Vertical Threads

AI Reflections, Examen practices, and discernment journals tied to class projects and curriculum

Evaluate how AI serves or threatens justice, inclusion, and equity

Viewing AI as a tool, being aware of its limitations, and using discernment in everyday use of this tool

Cross-departmental integration of AI assignments and expectations

Spiral development from awareness to application to revision. Practicing loving and respectful language in life

Collaborative spaces and projects for students to tinker with AI, share ideas, and build ethically. Propose new ideas for AI use, guidelines, and restrictions in school and beyond.
