The Remembrance in Schools project involves a team of four researchers. From 2013-19, the project has examined Remembrance Day in schools. We are based at the School of Education, Oxford Brookes University (Dr Patrick Alexander, Dr Annie Haight, Dr Susannah Wright) and the School of Education, Brunel University, London (Dr David Aldridge).
We are interested in: 1) What schools are doing to mark Remembrance Day, on or around 11th November, any why; and 2) What members of school communities think they are 'remembering', and think and feel about their schools' Remembrance Day events.
From 2013 to 2018 the project has focused on schools in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and in 2019 schools elsewhere in the UK. We have collected data through:
Online questionnaires with teachers/other school staff;
Interviews with teachers;
Observations of school Remembrance Day events;
Questionnaires with pupils;
Short accounts of Remembrance Day events from pupils and teachers.
We have also worked with a small group of teachers, other educators in higher education and museums, interest group members, and arts commissioners, to produce a pamphlet offering stimulus questions and links to resources for schools planning their Remembrance Day events as well as preparation and follow-up activities. For a summary of our research so far, and a pdf copy of our pamphlet, please go to publications.
