Overall development approach:
CoMUni was developed by utilising a combination of the behaviour change wheel and co-production approaches. A summary of each of these approaches can be found below:
The Behaviour change wheel (BCW):
Created by Michie et al. (2011), the BCW was developed with two main aims: to describe and systemise the techniques used for behaviour, and to provide a taxonomy which can be used to identify which techniques are most effective. It provides the following steps for behaviour change intervention development which were utilised in this process:
Further information on this approach can be found here.
Co-production:
At its core, the co-production approach aims to deliver effective interventions, whilst providing a beneficial experience for all involved (researchers and students alike). The process actively incorperated the following values of co-production outlined in the Stronger together toolkit found here:
Collaboration - the process was all about working together towards a common goal. The researcher talked to each of the team before the process to build trust and a working relationship.
Diversity - The researcher advertised the oppurtunity as widely as possible across the university to give all students an oppurtunnity to take part.
Respect - The researcher aimed to provide safe, inclusive and accessible spaces for all participants where they felt comfortable to contribute.
Empowerment - The team were reminded of the value that they brought to the project through their lived expereince as students. They were also reminded of the decisions they had made during the development of the intervention.
Involvement - The co-production team were involved in all stages of the intervention development, making the key decisions in relation tot he function, techniques used and content of CoMUni.
More information on the co-production approach can be found here.
Steps of development:
Step 1: Advisory group meeting
A meeting was conducted with a staff-advisory group who were all individuals with between 2 and 16 years of experience working with students within a university environment. During this meeting, the group were presented with the proposed development process and provided feedback in light of their prevous work with students.
Step 2: Recruiting a co-production team
Individuals were recruited using flyers and social media posts on the researcher’s instagram account. Before the first workshop, each of the seven team members was invited to a one-to-one meeting, where the researcher introduced themselves and outlined the aim of the research project. The aim of these meetings was to ensure that each team member felt as comfortable as possible during the process.
Step 3: Co-production workshops
Four one-hour online workshops with the team were conducted on Zoom between February and April 2023. Each session began with a short introduction followed by the researcher outlining the session aims. A number of tasks were then set, which included a mixture of individual and group tasks completed through multiple online platforms. These workshop tasks were informed by the steps four, five, seven and eight of the BCW framework.
Step 4: Intervention development
After completion of the workshops, the researcher took the key decisions made and as a result produced CoMUni. The key features decided by the team included the interventions main function, the techniques used, the type of content included and how this content was presented.
