Zoom is the video conferencing tool the district uses for remote learning. A guide from Common Sense Media can be found here. Zoom has built in security and "teacher/host tools" that allow us to maintain a productive learning environment.
For a majority of the school, Zoom sessions are held on Chromebooks. For the best experience, make sure you have as few windows/tabs open as possible. Zoom and Google are working to improve the experience, but the nature of Chromebooks doesn't provide all the abilities of the laptop version of Zoom.
Chromebook -
Although the Chromebook has a "Zoom App" - ideally your student should join Zoom from the browser to help manage the number of resources used on the Chromebook.
iPads -
Please open the Zoom app first and sign in with the students' @bronxvilleschool.org account. This should stay logged in and then when the student clicks on the Zoom link from other programs, it will log them in with their school account info.
Our Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students are given a district iPad for Remote Learning. The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for the district is located to the right.
LMS
iPads are the best tool for the Learning Management System (LMS) that the K-2 students uses called Seesaw. Click here for a Common Sense Media guide to Seesaw.
Security
The iPads are managed by the district and includes a "MDM profile" that you might notice in the Settings of the device. The MDM profile allows the school to manage the apps, allowing only teacher requested apps and gives us the ability to "push" district purchased apps to the devices remotely. In addition to this management tool - there is also the "Relay Smart Agent" that is a web filter.
Battery
We have two different types of iPads available for students, iPad Minis (Kindergarten) and iPad Generation 7s (1st and 2nd grade). Battery life will depend on how the device has been handled, but regardless of prior use, multiple hours on a Zoom call will drain the battery. Please plan on having the device plugged in for the best experience.
Our 3rd Grade students through 9th Grade students have all been issued a district owned Chromebook. Note: Our high school has sent out multiple surveys asking if students need a device. A handful of 10th through 12th Grade students have requested. If you need a device, please reach out to your guidance counselor.
LMS
We are a Google school and use a majority Google products. Our LMS is Google Classroom and our Student Information System (SIS) is Infinite Campus. Google Classroom is the place where students are assigned work, get Zoom links and announcements from the teacher and get general information. Infinite Campus is where students can access grades (more information on Infinite Campus below). Students can access Google Classroom by logging into their Google account and visiting classroom.google.com.
Security
All student Google accounts are managed by the district. Once students log into a Chromebook (or sign in to the Chrome browser on a non-district device) they are under the guidance of our filter from Relay Lightspeed. The district also has the ability to remotely install district required Chrome extensions and has prevented students from installing their own. Currently, we push out the Zoom extension, Screencastify, Kami, and then a Relay Lightspeed to help filter and a Classlink extension to help students log into the Classlink system (coming soon).
Battery
Similar to the iPads, the Chromebooks are in varying states of use. With video streaming, it is best to have the device plugged in. NOTE: There is a known issue with Zoom crashing if too many tabs/windows are open in Chrome. Please try to keep windows and tabs closed if they are not needed.
Infinite Campus is the Student Information System (SIS) the entire school uses. It is used daily to take attendance, input grades and comments and at the end of every quarter, Trimester and Semester to give out grades. You can access Infinite Campus from our district website (Bronxvilleschool.org > Parents > Portal). If you need assistance, you can email portalsupport@bronxvilleschool.org.
Elementary School Use
The Elementary School uses Infinite Campus for Daily Attendance and to give out report cards. It is not used and updated on a daily basis, and only Parents have logins to access information.
Middle and High School Use
The Middle and High School use Infinite Campus daily to record and input grades for assignments. Students and Parents have access to this "open gradebook," but it is closed during school hours to allow everyone to focus on the work and not the grades being input.
We are a Google school that uses the complete Google Education Suite. Students upon registration are assigned an Active Directory and Google account to access all services. The naming convention of the account is shared on the Google Doc to the right.
Kindergarten
Will mostly only use Google Drive. Their main Learning Management System (LMS) is Seesaw and files might be saved into their Google Drive.
First Grade
Will begin to use Google Docs to type out their thoughts.
Second Grade
Will begin to use Google Slides and continue with Google Docs.
Third Grade
Will use Google Sites to create an internal website, use Google Classroom as a LMS and continue with Slides and Docs.
Fourth Grade
Will use everything from Third Grade and Google Sheets to start exploring math concepts.
Fifth Grade
Will continue to fine tune their skills on all of the above tools.
