Jenny Maslen, Head of School @ BSS
Jenny has been working in education for over 20 years. She spent 9 years working as an integral part of the leadership team at BSM; working across the primary and senior school to drive up standards in education and promote attitudes and behaviours that will prepare students to be confident learners and compassionate citizens both now and in the future. During her time at BSM, she developed the Internship Programme for Omani nationals which led to the school winning the International Schools Award 2019 for Strategic Business Initiative of the year.
Jenny attended the University of Wales where she studied Theatre Film and Television Studies and went on to do her teaching qualification. Her interest in staff development has led her to gain an accreditation in Business and Personal Coaching. Jenny is also a COBIS accredited facilitator, delivering Middle Leadership training internationally to school leaders.
Jenny attended a small village school and was brought up in the countryside of the South East of England. She is proud to call Oman her home and lives with her dog, Herbie.
Jenny believes that a FlexEd curriculum allows students a unique opportunity for social emotional growth, relationship building, and high expectations both in and out of the classroom. She is looking forward to meeting students, parents and staff and becoming part of the school and wider community.
John Waltho - English Teacher. Senior School Curriculum Leader @ BSS
John is a proud member of BSS. He has been teaching for 25 years, chiefly in UK independent schools. He has had a long and distinguished career with roles including Head of Music, Head of English, Head of ICT, and has also taught Humanities and Maths. For several years, the breadth of his experience led to him being a Director of Studies and Curriculum Coordinator. He has taught English and Music at GCSE and A Level and has also been a GCSE examiner.
John has a degree in Music from Newcastle University. It was here that he met his wife, who he has been married to for nearly 30 years.
John has a passion for culture - literature, art and music - and particularly enjoys writing, performing, conducting, creating and composing music. He hopes that, under his tutelage, students discover a love of all aspects of creativity and gain satisfaction from hard work and rigour, and benefit from the joy learning and logic can bring.
John’s wife and 4 children all live in the UK, with the eldest having completed a degree at Cambridge University. His wife is Head of English at a major UK boarding school. John is looking forward to his third year at BSS and says he is “excited by the opportunities that FlexEd brings for our students, curriculum and future of BSS.”
Sunny Singh - Maths Teacher. Community Engagement Officer @ BSS
Sunny has been working in education for over 12 years. During this time he has gained an enormous amount of experience in a number of significant roles. These have included being a Lead Academic Mentor to Mathematics Teachers, supporting students as a Behaviour Mentor and more recently having had training and leading on Safeguarding at BSS. He is our Community Liaison Officer, working with the school and local community to provide further opportunities for our pupils and school families.
Sunny graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2008 with a BA Hons in Sport Studies and completed his Masters degree in Education in 2017.
Sunny is a proud member of British School Salalah and its community. He has been in Salalah for nearly two years and says he “can honestly say moving to Salalah has been the best thing for me and my family”. They enjoy all Salalah has to offer: the beaches, mountains, food and especially the way of life. He and his family are committed to the life they have made in Salalah and want to continue to make a positive impact at BSS and the wider community.
Yassmin Hamid - Arabic & French Teacher. MFL Coordinator @ BSS
Yassmin has nearly 20 years of experience teaching Modern Foreign Languages in both Arabic and French to native and non-native Arabic speakers in primary and secondary schools. She spent 7 years working at the British International School Riyadh where as well as teaching Arabic she was the Internationalism, Culture and Diversity Coordinator. She led on many cultural and international initiatives that celebrated the diversity of its students and encourages them to become global citizens with an international mindset.
Yassmin joined BSS in 2019, moving to what she describes as "the beautiful city of Salalah". In the time she has been at the school, she has created effective partnership with parents in order to support and improve students’ achievement and personal development, creating an Arabic language syllabus for each year group from Y1 upwards. She looks forward to creating cultural opportunities to continue to grow and encourage a flourishing school commuity at BSS.
Yasmmin loves teaching. Loves being with her students and above all strives to provide a safe, happy environment that motivates all students at BSS. Her motto to students’ is: "Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

Nilufar Yeasmin - Art & PSHE Teaching @ BSS
Nilufar Yeasmin has been living with her family in Oman since childhood. She has worked in education for over 9 years and is experienced in teaching the Cambridge International curriculum in schools across Salalah. She joined BSS in 2018, and is now teaching Art, Design and Technology and PSHE, and supporting learning in both the Primary and Senior School.
Yeasmin graduated with a B.Sc in Biology from National University and holds a Bachelor in Education from Indian Education Academy. She was recognised by the Ministry of Education Oman, in the Dhofar region, for her creative teaching of Science in 2017.
Besides working in education, Yeasmin has a passion for art - particularly canvas painting and murals - and is a member of Oman Fine Art Society. The school values Yeasmin's creativity and is pleased that she will be contributing to creative projects at BSS in the future.
Yeasmin is excited to be part of the FlexEd team and is looking forward to working with and supporting students to do the best they can.

Matt Clark - Head of Science @ BSM
Matt is Head of Science at BSM and leads and coordinates a team of 12 science teachers. He has over 10 years of teaching experience and spent 6 of those years at schools in the UK before moving to Muscat to work at BSM. His teaching career includes delivering science to all age groups in secondary and he has successfully supported many students in gaining Chemistry and Physics at GCSE and A Level. He has been Head of Department at BSM for two years and has many years experience in leading and delivering on research-informed teaching and learning projects, using technology to support and enhance student learning. Matt has recently led his department in gaining the Gold Science Mark and in being the first international school to be awarded a Science Mark for STEM
Matt gained his BSc in Science with Physics and Maths from the prestigious University of Durham. He also went on to do his teaching qualification and Masters degree in Education at Durham.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys exploring Oman; in particular, kitesurfing along Oman’s beautiful coastline and crossing the desert in his Jeep.
Matt is looking forward to building links with Salalah and developing a world-class science education via FlexEd.
Damian Rayner - Science Teacher @ BSM
Damian has been teaching Physics and Science at BSM for the past 6 years. He is also the Head of Year 10 and has previously had the responsibility of leading Science in Key Stage 3.
Prior to moving to Oman, he taught in an inner-city school in Manchester...very close to the Manchester City Etihad stadium! Damian’s many years of teaching means he has been involved in rolling out multiple new initiatives, including establishing Google Suite for Education at his previous school. Using technology to enhance learning is something that Damian has brought with him to BSM.
Damian went to university in Lancaster and graduated with a degree in Physics. He is currently in the final stages of gaining a Masters degree in Education.
Damian is very much looking forward to the opportunity to work with British School Salalah and to get to know its students.
Andrew Wan - Science Teacher @ BSM
Andrew has worked at BSM for the last four years teaching Biology at GCSE and A Level and Science to our younger students in the Senior School.
He has taught for over 14 years. His teaching career began in the South East of England and soon took Andrew overseas where he has taught at top British international schools in Abu Dhabi and Beijing where he was the Head of Science.
Andrew originally graduated from the University of Manchester from the School of Biological Sciences and then completed his teaching qualification at Canterbury Christ Church University, England. He lives in Muscat with his wife Katrina, who is an English teacher, and has two children who are both students at BSM.
Andrew is looking forward to working with the students at BSS through the FlexEd platform which he is excited and keen to be involved in.
Dan Comber - Head of Computing, Business Studies and Economics @ BSM
Dan is the Head of Computing, Business Studies and Economics at BSM. He spent 12 years teaching in leading UK schools before moving to the British School Muscat 3 years ago. Outside of providing a high standard of education to students in the classroom, Dan has been a lead for Business within the highly innovative PiXL group. PiXL (Partners in Excellence) is a national provider in raising standards and provision for students across the UK. Dan has a degree in Business Management from Royal Holloway University and has also studied at The University of Massachusetts.
Dan has a great love of Oman and all it has to offer. He is recently married, having met his wife here in Oman, and shares his home with their cat called Donut! Dan and his wife enjoy exploring Oman, the beaches, the culture and the warm hospitality. In his spare time, Dan enjoys the gym, basketball, technology, property and wealth creation.
Dan is excited to support BSS students in the field of GCSE Computer Science. He has fully embraced the concept of FlexEd, seeing it as an excellent way of providing quality education. His department wishes all students and parents at BSS a warm hello and he looks forward to meeting you all.
Irfan Ashraf - Computing Teacher @ BSM
Irfan is in his second year of teaching Computer Science and Economics at BSM. Prior to joining BSM, he taught Computer Science and Information Communication Technology for 8 years in UK schools.
Irfan graduated with a degree in Economics, and went on to study Computer Science, at The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He spent 10 years working in the IT Industry before deciding on a career change and undertaking a postgraduate qualification in teaching, a decision he has not regretted.
Irfan lives in Muscat with his wife and two children. His eldest son is a student at BSM, while his second son is yet to have his first birthday. His family enjoys living in Muscat, describing it as “such a safe and family-friendly country”.
Irfan is excited to be part of FlexEd at BSS and is looking forward to meeting both students and parents.
Anne Hassan - French Teacher @ BSM
Anne has been teaching both French and German at BSM for the past 15 years. She spent the first 10 years of her career teaching in UK schools before moving to Oman with her family in 2006.
Anne graduated from the University of Lyon in France with a Business and Languages degree, spending her final year at the University of Hull as part of the Erasmus exchange programme. Anne then completed her teaching qualification and taught in various inner city schools in Hull.
Anne lives in Muscat with her husband and daughter and loves exploring Oman in her free time.
Anne is looking forward to working with students at BSS and being part of the FlexED programme.
Jennifer McCubbin - French Teacher @ BSM
Jennifer is now in her fourth year at BSM, where she is the KS3 Coordinator for Languages, and she is excited to be joining the FlexEd team at BSS. Jennifer was a student at the BSM primary school from 1995-1997 and was thrilled to return to the secondary school to teach in 2018. She loves Oman and is delighted to call Muscat home, where she lives with her husband and much loved cat.
Jennifer holds a BA with Honours in History of Art and Spanish as well as an MA Spanish Cultural Studies. She completed her PGCE at the University of Reading in 2017 in Secondary MFL. Jennifer is also currently in her third year of her PhD in association with the University of Leeds.
Jennifer has been teaching French and Spanish for six years and is looking forward to bringing her enthusiasm and experience to her lessons with students at BSS.
