Learning to read is one of the most important journeys children go through in school. Letters and sounds make up one part, and the wonderful world of stories make up another. Together they help develop a student's literacy and communication skills, as well as general knowledge. Reading also sparks curiousity and stirs the imagination.
As children develop as readers, they need skills other than decoding in order to work out what texts mean. Key skills they need to develop are skimming, scanning, predicting and inference.
"Handwriting is a very complex skill to master, one that involves linguistic, cognitive, perceptual and motor components, all of which have to be coordinated into an integrated fashion." (National Handwriting Association, UK)
