All communication regarding the GBRT U19 Programme (including any event-related information) will be sent by the GBRT Office to registered coaches and not to the parents/guardians of triallists or the triallists themselves. It is the responsibility of the triallist’s registered coach to ensure that all relevant information is passed on to both the triallist and their parents/guardians.
Registered coaches must also ensure that parents/guardians, head teachers, college principals and employers (if appropriate) are kept fully informed of the progress of their triallists and that adequate notice is given of any likely requests for leave of absence.
If you have any questions about the programme and rowing for GB, in the first instance please go to your child's coach who will be able to contact us with any queries.
All coaches will be sent the GBRT provisional calendar at the start of the season.
For rowers that meet the requirements and are invited to take part in trials throughout the season, here are some important dates to note:

Unfortunately, rowing is an increasingly expensive sport and this section outlines the rationale behind the charges that we have to make for events as well as giving some pointers towards sources of funding to support those rowers with international aspirations. Whilst accepting that rowing is expensive it must be stressed that we are always looking for ways to reduce costs wherever possible without compromising the safety and integrity of our trialling process.
Charges for events
We receive no funding for our trials and assessments so these have to be run on a break-even basis with the charges for attendees covering the costs that we are charged. For example, for a residential event the costs will include use of the facilities both on and off the water (hire of the lake and meeting rooms, water safety cover, boat racking etc), provision of medical and physio services as well as food and accommodation.
We currently receive some funding towards the World Championships team, although the amount does not cover all of the costs incurred for both the training camp and the event which is why there is a contribution required by the rowers. The Coupe de la Jeunesse is run as a break-even event in the same way as the trials and assessments through the season. For the Coupe there is no residential training camp between the end of Crew Formation and the event itself although crews will continue to train together through this period. Often crews and coaches will base their training around a venue and crew members who live locally to that venue will do their best to provide accommodation for those who live further away. We are grateful to those families who are able to support the Coupe crews in this way. If you are able to help host a fellow crewmate to your son or daughter if selected for the Coupe then we are sure that this kindness will be repaid at some point in the future.
It would be wonderful if there were no charges to be made to the rowers for trialling and competing but as outlined above there are costs to trial in the U19 system and as a guide to help in your financial planning the charges for last season are listed below.
The costs for the 2022 Season were as below:
October: Potential Camp £345 (This cost is covered for DISE Athletes only)
November: EID £30
December: Potential Camp £230
February: Water Assessment £50
April: Trial Regatta £35
March: Spring Assessments £442
May: Munich Regatta £420, European Rowing U19 Championships £75
June: Crew Formation part 1 £50
July: Final Crew Formation £495
July/August: Coupe de la Jeunesse £1050, World Rowing U19 Championships £1200
Financial support
We understand that trialling and competing for the GB Rowing Team can be costly. Unfortunately, our funding does not cover the full cost of the events. Previously rowers have been successful in applying for financial help from their school/club, their regional rowing council or their local council.
Some councils often have a grant for talented individuals that can be used for training, competition entries, transport, accommodation or sport specific equipment. We are happy to write supporting letters for U19 athletes in the trials system that are applying for funding.
The Trials Management Group of the GBRT U19 Trials believe that the welfare and wellbeing of all participants are paramount, whether as competitors or as spectators and is committed to ensuring safeguarding practise reflects statutory responsibilities, government guidance and complies with best practice and British Rowing requirements. It acknowledges that everyone, regardless of age, ability or disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation, or socio-economic background, has equal rights to safety and protection and that special measures are required to protect children and young people and Adults at Risk.
At each event we will publish the name of the safeguarding lead and a number to call in case of any issues.
If you have any safeguarding issues you wish to report, please follow this link to the Safeguarding page on the British Rowing website.
For each residential event, an information circular will be sent to all coaches which includes a link to the parental consent form. This MUST be completed before your child can attend the activity. Parental consent forms are online Google forms and will be used to cover each event.
Each rower is required to have a valid British Rowing or Scottish Rowing membership to trial and race in the U19 programme.
British Rowing membership gives the rower a ClubHub account, as does the British Rowing Scottish & Overseas membership used for GB trials entries for Scottish Rowing members.
We are aware that in some schools, membership may be arranged by the school. If you are unsure whether your child has a current membership please check with your coach or the GBRT Office. Please do not purchase new memberships without checking first as each membership has a unique ID.
If a rower is selected to attend a camp or competition, GBRT may request that information detailing emergency contacts, allergies, dietary requirements and passport details are uploaded to the rower's ClubHub account. Please only update the GBRT section of ClubHub if you have been asked to do so by the GBRT Office.
If you cannot access ClubHub:
Please do not set up a new membership/ClubHub account if you are unable to log in. All rowers will already have an account set up and each rower's membership unique membership ID is used for trials and recording race data. If you are having issues accessing the rower's ClubHub account, please contact gbrtclubhub@britishrowing.org.
If the account has been set up by the school:
Some schools will set up memberships on behalf of rowers when they first start rowing. This may mean that rowers/parents/guardians may not have access to log into the account. If this is the case please contact gbrtclubhub@britishrowing.org and the membership contact can be updated.
Guidance on how to update ClubHub can be accessed below.
The Great Britain Rowing Team are always lucky to have wonderful support at all of our events.
If your child is selected and you want to travel to support, here are some things below to be aware of:
Team Selection for events is usually a very tight turn around before travelling to the event. All information relating to the event including the flight times and details about the team's hotel will be sent to those selected in the Team Circular. A copy is also sent to coaches to pass on to parents/guardians.
At a competition, the general rule is that there is no opportunity for parental contact with your son or daughter other than that at the regatta course itself. We will always try to make time at the venue for rowers to meet with parents where the racing schedule allows. However, please do not approach the team base as our coaches will arrange for your son or daughter to come to you at suitable times. This will reduce distraction for crews still preparing to race.
British Rowing will release a Team list and statement in the week running up to the event. We ask that individuals do not announce their selection publicly on social media until this date in case of any changes.
If you would like your child to travel back from an event with you and not with the team you must agree to the following statements:
The rower must remain as part of the Team until the conclusion of the Regatta and they have been officially released from Team duties by their coach.
From the point at which they are released from Team duties, the rower will no longer be covered by GB Rowing Team insurance, both travel and medical, and you/they are responsible for ensuring appropriate private cover is in place.
The family are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements from the point at which the rower is released from Team duties. The GB Rowing Team are unable to rearrange flights for rowers to travel back separately.
The family are liable for any costs incurred to GB Rowing Team as a result of the rower's decision to return outside of the team arrangements.
World Rowing U19 Championships - Spectator tickets
The World Rowing U19 Championships will have tickets for sale for the spectator grandstands. This is the only event the GBRT U19s attend where tickets are sold to spectate. Owing to the dates of selection and the World Rowing deadlines, tickets often have to be purchased before the team has been selected. If, having purchased tickets, a potential team member is not selected for the event, we will endeavour to sell tickets on and refund the purchase price. Please be aware that we can only offer a refund if we are able to sell the tickets on and, regrettably, sometimes this is not possible.
