Big Questions- Careers Week

Year 1

Our Big Question this year has been about careers. What jobs could I do in the future? Which jobs are most interesting or challenging? What would I like to be when I grow up? These are the questions we have addressed and helped the children to answer.

Meeting people with interesting careers

We got to meet an actress, a lawyer, an architect and an orthopecic surgeon, who is a  doctor that focused on broken bones.  Each class listened to a short talk about what these people do in their jobs day-to-day and then had a questions and answers session to learn even more!

Jobs of the future

As part of learning about jobs for the future, we have focused on what it is like to be a programmer. The children have been introduced to Scratch Jr to show them the early stages of coding. As programmers, the children were given a story about a blue cat that went to the beach and they had to code the programme to make the cat move in a way that fits the story. Later, the children were able to create and programme their own stories.

Learning about different careers

We asked children what they might want to be when they grow up. The children have learned about new jobs and careers such as an architect, sportsperson, designer, content creator, inventor and many more. The children played various games to better understand what was involved in each role and acted out the careers to their friends.
