A Day in the Life of... is our new topic where the children get to experience life through the perspective of different people. We begin by looking at ourselves, what makes us unique, our families and our friends. We talk about the similarities and differences between us and the people we know. This includes looking at the different festivals that people celebrate, such as Diwali and Bonfire Night. The children then learn about what a career is and why it is important. We allow the children to lead on what jobs they would like to learn more about and focus on those. The children were also visited by parents who shared what they do as their job and we had a special visit at the end of our topic.
It was really interesting to find out about the different jobs that our parents do. We learnt about what they have to do in their job and what skills are needed.
Learning about different jobs meant we got the chance to pretend and role play lots of different jobs!
We learnt about friendships and how we can be good friends to each other. We read stories like Meesha Makes Friends to discuss what we can do if we are finding it difficult. We learnt key words such as 'resilient' and made our friends into a big friendship chain.
We started out first Talk for Writing journey with The Little Red Hen. We started off by becoming really familiar with the story, the setting and the characters. We learnt about sequencing, we role played and spent time describing the characters. We then drew our story map and came up with actions to help us remember each part, we call this part 'Imitation'. Once we knew the story well we began our 'Innovation' stage where we changed the character of the story and the words we use to describe it, it was not longer the Little Red Hen! By the end all children were able to verbally retell the new and innovated story using key sequencing vocabulary.
At the end of the topic, we received a visit from our local Firefighters. We explored the inside of a fire engine and how different equipment is used in an emergency.
